There are many factors that can influence you having that bad experience:
Cucumbers like direct sun for at least 6 hours; you can also have them in fewer hours but it can influence your cucumbers.
You should not flood the substrate, they like humidity, and a substrate rich in organic matter. Have compost prepared for when they bloom; you add a little every week. If you have worm or livestock manure, they love that.
Be aware of pests, they love to come just when the flowers are at their most beautiful.
I have been able to harvest large, tasty cucumbers in my garden. What I had was time without the seeds germinating.
