There are a lot of very poor people in the U.S. A lot of them would love to have a camper. The poorest of the poor live on the street, in tents. It takes money to keep up a camper. First of all, you have to own the camper. Then you need gas, and if it breaks down you need to fix it. But yes, many people living on a tight budget find camper life to be more affordable.

I love campers, but for fun, not for a lifestyle. Some campers are quite luxurious and cost upwards of $100,000. The people in the movie probably did not have one of those campers.
