I know EXACTLY how you feel! I worked yesterday in mine as well, but what I thought would be rejuvenating the soil with some manure and planting plants turned into rejuvenating it, but then hacking at the 5 million + dandelions that seemed to have invaded overnight! I even had a thistle plant take up residence! So much for planting!
I think maybe out best tactic is to place to do what we can in a specific amount of time and walk away for a while. Maybe that way it won't be quite so daunting.
Take care and have a lovely week!

Oh my gosh, I know exactly what you mean, @elizabethbit. The weeds seem to have been plotting their attack over the winter! The thistles are the worst. It seems every year they grow in number even though we pull them continually. My sister who is a smarter gardener than I am tells me that they grow under ground and come up elsewhere, so I'm afraid it's a losing battle!
Interesting that thistles are rhizome! I didn't know that! They are a pain though, indeed. Hopefully, since this is the first one ever in this area of our property, perhaps it was from a seed. I didn't see any roots running outward from it. Fingers crossed anyway!
Because we live in berry country, we also have to fight the rogue blackberry vines as well. Not so much in the garden area, but in the forest in small open spaces. If left to their own devices, they can literally devour anything in their path. We've got a cap for our pickup truck, and although I know where it is, you cannot see it anymore! Craziness!
Hopefully, both you and I can at least keep the garden areas under control! Take care and happy gardening @jayna!
