Ranchtastic Scenes and Fish On Dreams

It's amazing how much I can get up to if I am fully rested or at least partially rested. Yesterday was one of those days, I got up and I was amazed that I felt almost human, so like most humans, I got to the breakfast activity part of my day.

Well, not for me, but I did whip up some delectable looking sourdough blueberry scones for the hubs, and let me tell you, that activity put me in a very ecstatic mood because I got to use my sparkle sugar! I love dusting sugar! There is something so satisfying about finishing off a pastry with a bit of a sparkle.

The hubs, maybe not as excited about the sparkle sugar as I, was very enthusiastic about his breakfast that I served him right out of the oven with a big ol slab of Irish butter on it.

I then moved on to garden chores, there were turnip greens to thin. I later simmered those turnip greens southern style and happily noshed on such delighfulness. Having never gardened on the ranch before, I must say, I am very much enjoying the newness of it all. The climate, the soil, the overall vibe is completely different from my farm in Idaho, so I am having fun just discovering everything, and the microclimate I get here on this southern exposed hill next to the lake is just splendid!

All of my corn is up, the squashes are all transplanted and thriving, and the raspberries are looking like they are going to almost overwhelm me with fruit here in a few weeks. I got them all tied back, and it's amazing how well they are looking after I went through and renovated the canes, cleaned out the long piled up debris, and fed them.

And I can't walk by the garlic without stopping and sighing. It is the best crop of garlic I have ever grown. Due to actually being around and not running around as much, I got the garlic spring fertilized at the right time, and the plant just adores it here in the Montana woods. Scape season is just around the corner and I can't wait to eat some scape pesto!

This year we have had a lot of unsettled weather, I can't remember a time when we had so many blown down trees, as it's not just a thing here but down on my Idaho farm too. Yesterday, the corg and I plunked a chainsaw in the holder on the ATV and sped off down the driveway to do a bit of tree removal. Since I may be the kid of a timber faller, let's just say anytime I get to brandish a saw is a happy one, my little Stihl and I buzzed that tree out of the road in no time.

So, with my chores all done, I came home and did my almost daily walk. No matter how much work I do, I tend to always exercise about 45 minutes a day, even if it's just a stroll through the woods. As I meandered about, listening to music, I kept seeing rainbows jumping in the lake. It had rained earlier in the day, the sky was overcast, and the lake was just still. Except for the fin slapping cadence of leaping trout. So, I walked down to the dock with the intent to just sit for a bit with the corg and enjoy the scenery.

Well, the siren song that is fish on, got the best of me and before you could say scales and whales, I had a pole and was casting out my lure. Right of the bat my lure was hit by a monster rainbow, I locked in and became the Fisher Kat.

Then the corg ruined the moment.

Everytime you cast, the corg freaks out in the most heeler corg whiny want to go get projectile cause you are throwing it manner. I have to tell her NO every cast, as we have had a bit of a problem with her following the lure into the lake before. The thing is, the corg is no lab, she no swim good.

Well, as I was reeling in my lure, I saw the flash of the rainbow striking my spinner, the bump of the bite, when the dang corg fell off the dock backwards.

I plunked my pole down on the dock, laid on my belly, and began the long, arduous process of getting my dog out of the water, as she is surprisingly dense and clings to the dock under metal like a barnacle on the hull of a fishing trawler.

After lifting my already repentant and shamed corg out of the water, I marched back up the hill to the house, soaked. In my wake was a chagrined dog, who knew she had made a fishing faux pas.

I think I may go fishing again today if the weather cooperates. May leave the lead weight corg in the house though...
