A delicious stroll through La Boqueria Market - Barcelona / Un sabroso paseo por el Mercado de La Boqueria - Barcelona

Visiting a city's traditional market is a must for me, because it's a space that reveals much of the essence of the place, its flavors, colors, and even the way people are.

La Boqueria Market, also known as Mercat de Sant Josep, is Barcelona's main market, and that's where I headed one morning during my trip through this cosmopolitan Spanish city. My plan was to wander through its aisles and, around midday, have lunch at one of the stalls.

Of course, there were many people, especially foreigners like me. At first I didn't know what to look at, each stall was so full of so many things that I had to stop for a few minutes at each one to appreciate all the products they offered. I love seeing that, it is very entertaining to learn about foods and preparations from other countries.

The origin of this market is quite ancient, I read that since the 12th century, farmers and merchants set up an open-air market in this part of the city, which continued over the years until the iron structure that exists today was inaugurated in 1840.

In its more than 200 stalls, you can find traditional products from Catalonia, Spain in general, and other countries. The contrast of colors is striking, although I didn't like seeing so much pre-packaged fruit, I suppose they cut it up so tourists will buy it ready to eat.

When it was time for lunch, I looked at the options available and sat down to eat a plate of fish. There's a lot of variety and the food is high quality, and I thought the prices were reasonable, too.

Then I continued on my way and came across some candy. No matter how much I've eaten, I always have room for that, especially for chocolate 😋.

In one of the aisles, I also came across a Venezuelan product: pre-cooked cornmeal for making arepas, which are now famous all over the world.

The part of the market I liked the most was the fresh produce section, everything was very colorful, and that's also where you could see local people buying their food for everyday life, everything looked less aesthetic but more real 😁.

The bulk goods section was also one of my favorites. I find the mix of smells and colors from the spices and nuts fascinating.

Well, to wrap things up, here's a refreshing fruit popsicle. I didn't buy any, but I just had to take a picture of that beautiful frozen arrangement.

La Boqueria Market is on La Rambla, and if you're ever in the area, you have to check it out! See you next time 😉.

It is fascinating that a market can trace its roots all the way back to the twelfth century. Finding pre-cooked cornmeal for arepas in the middle of Barcelona must have been a fun surprise.

Yes, I was really impressed by how old this market is...
Well, arepas have become very popular in recent years, and there are many Venezuelans in Spain, so I wasn't too surprised to see the flour there hehe. Cheers!

Oh, I'm sorry! It was unintentional, I forgot about this rule :(

However, perhaps you could consider including the option to review traditional markets in the community, as they are very important tourist attractions for most cities. Thank you!

You can really see the variety of food people eat in a particular place by visiting its traditional market. They also usually sell authentic local dishes and delicacies, which makes exploring the market even more interesting.

Haha! This reminds me of my friend, who always has room for dessert no matter how full she is.

I really love their nuts and spices section! Do they also sell a lot of almonds there?

That's right, markets are a must-see. Haha, I can't resist desserts 😋.

Yes, there were all kinds of nuts, including almonds. Cheers!
