A Taste of Baybay: Showcasing the City’s Local Delicacies and Souvenirs

Happy Tuesday Hivers!

I went to Baybay City, Leyte, to visit their newly built sports complex, which was inspired by the iconic Roman Colosseum. During our visit, I noticed that they also have a decent pasalubong center located just a short distance from the sports complex.

Of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to check it out and see what local delicacies, souvenirs, and other products Baybay City has to offer.

Come along with me as we explore Baybay City’s pasalubong center and discover some of the local treats and souvenirs you can bring home!

IMG_6993.jpeg

Pasalubong” refers to something you bring home as a gift from a trip. Usually, these are local delicacies, souvenirs, or other products that represent the place you visited. When you travel to a particular destination, you might buy something special from that place to bring home and share with your family or friends after your vacation.

As soon as I entered the Baybay City Pasalubong Center, I was warmly greeted by one of the staff members. She explained that everything displayed in the center is made by local residents of Baybay City, which makes the place even more special.

IMG_6996.jpeg

The center offers a variety of locally made products, including T-shirts, keychains, bags, food products, and other items that showcase the creativity and craftsmanship of the people of Baybay.

They also have some really cute bags made from romblon, a traditional natural material made from the dried leaves of the wild pandan, also known as screwpine. These dried leaves are woven and crafted into durable materials used for making various handicrafts. source

I found the bags particularly charming because they are not only practical but also showcase the creativity and traditional craftsmanship of the local community.

They also have a collection of adorable crocheted keychains in a variety of designs. If you’re someone who loves collecting keychains, I think you’ll definitely find something cute to add to your collection here.

With their colorful and creative designs, these little handmade keychains would also make lovely souvenirs or gifts for family and friends.

As I explored another corner of the center, I came across a selection of teas and coffee made from natural ingredients such as ginger, moringa, and turmeric. These ingredients are commonly known for their potential health benefits, making these locally made drinks an interesting option for those who enjoy natural and wellness-focused products.

It’s nice to see how local ingredients are being turned into products that visitors can enjoy and bring home.

Aside from those products, visitors also have plenty of local delicacies to choose from. They offer coconut vinegar, chips made from kangkong and cassava, as well as locally made spreads made from mango, jackfruit, and peanuts.

These aren’t entirely new foods for me since we live relatively close to Baybay City, so it’s quite easy for us to buy these local delicacies. I can personally say that they’re really delicious, which is probably why these products have become popular among locals and visitors alike.

What really caught me by surprise, though, was seeing garlic coffee. It was my first time coming across garlic coffee, and I honestly became curious about what it tastes like. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try it because I’m not allowed to drink coffee. Maybe someday, if I get the chance, I’ll finally find out what garlic coffee tastes like!

I enjoyed exploring the Baybay City Pasalubong Center. It was nice to see so many products made by local residents, from handmade crafts and accessories to unique food products and delicacies. If you’re visiting Baybay City, this is definitely a place worth checking out if you want to bring home a little taste of the city or a handmade gift for your loved ones.

It's always nice to bring home souvenirs and even food from places we visit. I love that the pasalubong center showcased the city's products and crafts. The garlic coffee is new indeed. I'm curious too, but I don't really like garlic :)

We’re totally opposite when it comes to garlic. I absolutely love garlic! I like adding it to almost every dish I cook. I love its aroma and the flavor it adds to food. Whenever I make fried rice, I especially love using lots of garlic, the more, the better!

The place looks clean and it was tidy, if ever that I went to different places, I also went here. It was good for a pasalubong center but I think their price was way higher compared to the local sellers around the place.

I want to try that kangkong leaves, I haven't tried it yet before.

Kangkong chips are delicious and crunchy. They’re definitely one of their best-selling pasalubong items.
