Autumn Harvest

The weather is getting cooler day by day, and my garden is gradually coming to an end. Last year's garden lasted a bit longer, continuing until October, but this year it's wrapping up sooner. I still have some herbs, but most of the fruits and vegetables are nearly finished.

This has been the toughest gardening season, I think. Spring didn't stay warm enough after a few brief warm days, summer wasn’t hot enough, and now autumn isn't quite warm enough either. I’ve mentioned the issue of fewer bees before, which also impacted my garden.

My grapevines were damaged from the last pruning. I had to cut some vines, so I didn’t get many grapes this year. Hopefully, next year will bring a full harvest of grapes.

I did have a few bunches from the largest, most mature vines, and they were so sweet and delicious. There weren’t enough to make jam this year, which was a bit disappointing, but I enjoyed sharing them with my dog. He likes to pick and eat them with me. Usually, early autumn grapes are a bit sour, but these were already sweet. I only wish I had more to make a batch of sweet jam.

The peas and apples are still doing well. The green beans, especially, are very healthy and tasty, and I still have enough to enjoy them for a while. The apples are small but turned red much earlier than usual this year. Typically, if I wait too long, the bugs or birds get to them first. This year, though, I was able to pick some nice reddish apples early. I’ll wait a little longer before eating them.

秋の収穫

天気が日に日に涼しくなってきて、庭の畑がだんだんと終わる時期を迎えはじめています。去年の畑は１０月くらいまで続き今年よりも長かったような気がしますが、今年はあっという間に終わりを迎えそうです。まだハーブがありますが、ほとんどの果物や野菜は終わりを迎えています。

今年の畑は今まででいちばん難しかったように思います。春はいっとき暖かくなったのですが、気温がなかなか上がらず、夏は暑い日数が少なく今も暖かさが足りないです。以前、蜂の数の問題を書いたことがありますが、それも大きな理由の一つだと思います。

ブドウは前回の剪定によって少しダメージを受けました。かなり伸びきっていたので剪定をしたのですが、そのためにブドウの数が少なかったです。来年はまたたくさん収穫できますように。

いちばん大きなブドウの木から採れた少しばかりのブドウはとても甘くておいしかったです。今年の収穫量ではジャムを作ることができなかったので、わずかなブドウを犬といっしょに食べて楽しみました。私の犬はブドウ狩りが好きです。たいてい、初秋のブドウは酸っぱいのですが、今年はすでにもう甘いです。ブドウジャムが作れるほど来年はたくさん収穫できますように。

一方、豆とりんごは調子がいいです。特にインゲン豆は元気でおいしく育っています。まだ当分収穫を楽しめそうです。今年のりんごの色づきはずいぶんと早く感じます。まだ小ぶりなのですが赤くなりました。通常はもう少し待つので、虫や鳥に食べられてしまうのですが、今年は十分赤くなってきているので早めに収穫できました。もう少し置いてから食べてみようと思います。
