Discovering Tortola: A Short but Stunning Adventure in the British Virgin Islands

Our next stop on the Thanksgiving cruise brought us to Tortola, a gem of the British Virgin Islands. It’s a small island—quiet, scenic, and full of that unmistakable Caribbean charm. But with only a few hours to explore, we had to choose carefully how to spend our time.

Since we had already done our fair share of shopping at the previous ports, this stop was all about scenery and discovery.

Choosing Exploration Over the Standard Tours

Like most Caribbean islands, Tortola offered plenty of excursions. The majority were open-air truck tours accommodating 20–25 people, each running about 2–3 hours. They covered the basics: beaches, viewpoints, and local history.

But we weren’t in the mood to be rushed. If we stumbled onto a beach we really loved, we wanted the freedom to enjoy it without watching the clock or sticking to a group itinerary.

So instead, we hired a private taxi for two hours—a simple choice that completely transformed our experience.

The Long, Winding Road to Smuggler’s Cove

We asked the driver a simple question:

“What’s the best beach for pictures?”

Without hesitation, he recommended Smuggler’s Cove, a remote and beautiful stretch of sand tucked away on the far western tip of the island.

The journey itself was an adventure—narrow roads, steep hills, sharp curves, and a final stretch that was more dirt path than road. The ride may have been bumpy, but it was absolutely worth it.

When we stepped out, we were greeted by a nearly private paradise.

Crystal-clear water. Soft sand. Peaceful waves.

It felt untouched—an escape within an escape—and we took some of our favorite pictures of the entire trip there.

Coastal Views and Hilltop Sights

After soaking in the beauty of Smuggler’s Cove, our driver took us along the coast to explore more of Tortola’s natural charm. We passed quiet bays, local villages, and hidden viewpoints that we never would’ve found on our own.

Then came one of the highlights: a drive back up into the hills where we were treated to breathtaking panoramic sights. From up high, we could see not only Tortola’s coastline but also several of the surrounding islands scattered across the horizon. It was one of those moments that makes you stop, breathe, and appreciate just how beautiful the world can be.

Along the way, we passed Tortola’s natural forest area, a lush reminder of how vibrant and resilient nature is on even the smallest islands.

Ending the Day With Some Light Shopping and Relaxation

With our two-hour taxi tour complete, we returned to the port with just enough time for a little window shopping before heading back onboard. Compared to the more intense excursions earlier in the cruise, Tortola gave us something different—quiet beauty, space to explore, and a slower pace that felt refreshing.

We ended the afternoon relaxing by the pool on the ship, soaking in the sunshine and reflecting on a surprisingly memorable stop.

Tortola in a Few Hours: A Perfect Balance

Even with limited time, Tortola delivered exactly what we hoped for:

a taste of Caribbean beauty, a bit of adventure, and views we won’t soon forget.
