Bye Ecuador, hello Peru!

The first boat ride lasted 10 hours, from Coca to Nuevo Rocafuerte, right at the border with Peru.
I had a really funny trip because I ended up in the captain’s cabin, chatting and drinking mate all the way with a young traveler from Germany. (picture 3)
It’s my first time traveling by river—here we are on the Napo.
The landscape is amazing: vast stretches of water as far as the eye can see, surrounded by wild nature.
The boat stops in different communities to let people on and off.

Nuevo Rocafuerte is the last Ecuadorian village. We stayed here for one night, and the next day we marked our exit from the country, bought some food supplies, and took a small boat for two hours to cross into Peru!

Welcome to Peru!

We arrived in Cabo Pantoja, a very small village with no cars or motorcycles—people get around on foot. We found an old woman who rented us a small room where we could set up our tent or hammock for a very cheap price, and then we began asking about the boats heading to Iquitos, the capital of the Peruvian jungle.

There are fast boats, as they say, and slow ones. The fast boat is more like a bus and takes less than two days of travel, while the slow ones are cargo boats that take about four days to reach Iquitos. We decided to take the slow one, to experience the journey as the local people do, which meant staying in the village for three days while waiting for the boat.

During that time, we had a wonderful experience—relaxing and sharing moments with the local people. We often spent the afternoons playing with the children in the river, and we began taking naps in the afternoon because of the hot climate.

El primer viaje en barco duró 10 horas,desde Coca hasta Nuevo Rocafuerte, justo en la frontera con Perú.
Tuve un viaje muy divertido porque terminé en la cabina del capitán, charlando y tomando mate todo el camino con un joven viajero de Alemania (foto 3).
Es mi primera vez viajando por río—estamos en el Napo.
El paisaje es increíble: inmensas extensiones de agua hasta donde alcanza la vista, rodeadas de naturaleza salvaje.
El barco se detiene en diferentes comunidades para que la gente suba y baje.

Nuevo Rocafuerte es el último pueblo ecuatoriano. Nos quedamos aquí una noche y, al día siguiente, marcamos nuestra salida del país, compramos provisiones y tomamos una pequeña embarcación durante dos horas para cruzar a Perú.

Llegamos a Cabo Pantoja, un pueblito muy pequeño sin autos ni motocicletas—la gente se mueve caminando. Encontramos a una señora anciana que nos alquiló una pequeña habitación donde pudimos instalar nuestra carpa o hamaca por un precio muy barato, y luego empezamos a preguntar por los barcos con destinación a Iquitos, capital de la selva peruana.

Hay barcos rápidos, como dicen aqui, y otros lentos. El rápido es más como un bus y tarda menos de dos días de viaje, mientras que los lentos son barcos de carga y tardan unos cuatro días para llegar a Iquitos. Decidimos tomar el lento, para vivir el viaje como lo hacen los locales, lo que significó quedarnos tres días en el pueblo esperando el barco.

Durante ese tiempo tuvimos una experiencia maravillosa—relajándonos y compartiendo momentos con la gente del lugar. A menudo pasábamos las tardes jugando con los niños en el río, y empezamos a dormir siestas por la tarde debido al clima caluroso.

Au revoir l’Équateur, bonjour le Pérou !

La première traversée en bateau a duré 10 heures, de Coca à Nuevo Rocafuerte, juste à la frontière avec le Pérou.
J’ai eu un super chouette voyage car j’ai fini dans la cabine du capitaine, à discuter et du maté tout le long avec un jeune voyageur allemand (foto 3).
C’est ma première fois en voyage par fleuve—nous sommes ici sur le Napo.
Le paysage est incroyable : de vastes étendues d’eau à perte de vue, entourées de nature sauvage.
Le bateau s’arrête dans différentes communautés pour faire monter et descendre les passagers.

Nuevo Rocafuerte est la dernière ville équatorienne. Nous y sommes restés une nuit et, le lendemain, nous avons marqué notre sortie du pays, acheté quelques provisions et pris une petite embarcation pendant deux heures pour traverser vers le Pérou.

Bienvenue au Pérou !

Nous sommes arrivés à Cabo Pantoja, un tout petit village sans voitures ni motos—les gens se déplacent à pied. Une vieille madame qui nous a loué une petite chambre où nous pouvions installer notre tente ou notre hamac pour un prix très bas, puis nous avons commencé à nous renseigner sur les bateaux avec destination à Iquitos, capitale de la jungle péruvienne.

Il y a des bateaux rapides, comme ils disent ici, et des lents. Le rapide est plutôt comme un bus et prend moins de deux jours de voyage, tandis que les lents sont des bateaux de marchandises qui prennent environ quatre jours pour arriver à Iquitos. Nous avons décidé de prendre le lent, pour vivre le voyage comme les locaux, ce qui impliquait rester trois jours dans le village en attendant le bateau.

Pendant ce temps, nous avons eu une expérience formidable—nous nous sommes détendus et avons partagé des moments avec les villageois. Nous passions souvent les après-midis à jouer avec les enfants dans la rivière, et nous avons commencé à faire la sieste l’après-midi à cause du climat chaud.
