Old Friends, New Memories
If you read my last post you know I’ve been in Washington D.C. visiting my friend Juan and his wife Margo over the past four days. Juan and I kept a longstanding tradition of going on one weekend trip a year for twenty-three years straight—through financial struggles, a pandemic, divorces, and health issues.
The first trip was to Vegas in 1999. Over a little more than the next two decades, we visited Chicago and Montreal (each several times), and even camped on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Our tradition came to a halt after our final trip to Montreal in 2023. These trips began as two young(ish) guys exploring new cities, networking, and having fun. Over the years the trips evolved into a kind of mental and spiritual boost, a reset for two middle-aged men whose life and careers had been established with smattering of adventures scattered throughout. As we become embroiled in the responsibilities, distractions, and goals of adulting I think all of us vastly underestimate how important adventure is to our happiness and well-being.
Since 2023 Juan and I haven’t spent much time together. My wife and I stood up at Juan and Margo’s wedding and he and I met once every few months for lunch. He was busy building a new life and preparing for his big move to the east coast. I had moved to the outer edge of the burbs and our new house consumed quite a bit of our free time. Life just began to take us in different directions. When we got together for the occasional lunch we mostly reminisced about old memories because we weren’t making new ones.
There were many things that surprised me about Washington D.C. in 2026 but what surprised me most was how quickly two old friends can pick up precisely where they left off. The adventure began the minute the Lyft dropped me off in front of Juan and Margo’s building. Over the course of the next three days—Margo spoiled us with some delicious southern cooking, we played card games, had great conversation, laughed over drinks on restaurant patios, put a ridiculous amount of miles on our feet exploring the sites of D.C., and even caught an amazing poetry reading at a place called Busboys & Poets. Most importantly, there was no doubt that my friend was extremely happy in his new chapter of life. We made lots of new memories and were reminded of precisely how valuable friendship is.
As for D.C., it’s changed tremendously since I was last there in 1991. Many of the dilapidated older homes that bordered the downtown area have been demolished and replaced with modern buildings. The city is noticeably cleaner and the overall vibe is one of unity and intelligence amongst all the different kinds of citizens. It’s a city brimming with fun, hope, and general optimism. It’s a big city with big city opportunities and culture as well as big city problems.

I remember getting on the subway to head into DC when I was a kid and there was a bike sitting in the station that had the tire stolen from it. I felt so bad for the person who was going to come back and find their bike without a tire. :) I'm glad you had a great time in DC!
That's a good example of the big city problems! We didn't encounter anything too crazy but there were loud fights outside their building in the wee hours of the morning a couple nights in a row. Thank you! It certainly was fun. I miss some of the culture that can be found in places like that.

A city built on a swamp and run by swamp monsters can still manage to be worth visiting, I guess. I still like the term "Mordor on the Potomac," though. I heard someone use that long before Trump's first term, and it applies regardless of the party in power, I think. But museums may draw me there one day nonetheless.
I've never been either. Love "Mordor on the Potomac". Fitting, and has been for a very long time. It's possibly more apparent now. I hope so.

It's definitely worth a visit, for the museums, if you're a student of history. There's a bit of a cold/dark/weird vibe downtown by all of the tourist attractions but as you venture out from there there's a real sense of community.
You guys actually did extremely well for 23 years. Often, we even struggle to meet up with friends for dinner, let alone going away for the weekend. These relationships really need to be cherished

It's crazy how difficult it is to get together with people these days! Yes, it was almost a miracle we were able to keep the tradition going for that long. Some years were a challenge to scratch up the money. We even managed to take our annual trip in 2015, just before Juan had his heart transplant. At my age friendships are the most valuable thing in life.
I remember DC being hot and muggy and kind of dirty compared to the California suburbs...
It's SO humid there! The humidity ran around to 80% the entire time I was visiting. DC was filthy when I was there in 1991, especially the further you got from the touristy areas. This visit the city was a lot cleaner. The subway reminded me more of Montreal's than NYC's or Chicago's.

I love D.C. Haven't been there for a few years, but always found it exciting. My husband had to go for classes there when we were married so I visited and spent a couple of days walking around by myself, checking out the museums. I can get lost in the Smithsonian for hours at a time.
Went there with my granddaughter and daughter years later. What a great time, showing my granddaughter around.
The picture of you and Juan are revealing. You guys look so comfortable. Don't wait so long next time :)
The museums are pretty amazing. We visited the National Museum of African American History (opened in 2016) and it was so much more thoughtfully designed and engaging than some of the older Smithsonians. The older museums are in real need of modernization. It would be so much fun to take a child to that city. My nephew is going on a class trip there next year.
When you have such a long history with a friend you become like family. That part of life isn't valued enough, especially with most males. We plan on one more trip for me to DC next year then possibly Philadelphia in 2028. I want to book a tour at the Spy museum for next year. It looked very interesting!
Can't resist showing this picture: I'm with my granddaughter at the Smithsonian in 2014. She is 21 now, so she must have been 9 then, and I was a spry 67. Note the black hair...we don't go grey in my family. Everything else false apart on schedule :).
