Reflections from Puerto Rico: Resilience, Return, and a New Cycle of Opportunity

This past holiday season, I had the chance to return to Puerto Rico with my family—a trip that offered far more than rest and celebration. It became a moment of reflection. Time spent with friends and family has a way of grounding you, but being back on the island also gave me perspective on how much has changed—and how much still bears the marks of the past.

An Island Still Healing

It has been years since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, yet reminders of its impact remain scattered across the island. Some are subtle, others unmistakable. Infrastructure scars, unfinished repairs, and stories still shared by those who lived through it all serve as constant reminders of how deep the disruption went.

And yet, what stood out most to me wasn’t what’s broken—it was what has been rebuilt.

Seeing communities rebound, businesses reopen, and families push forward is deeply inspiring. The resilience of the people here continues to be one of Puerto Rico’s greatest strengths.

Feeling Part of the Rebuild

This time, the visit felt different. I no longer see myself only as someone passing through or visiting from afar. I now feel part of the process.

With a couple of local projects underway, I’m actively trying to contribute—whether by helping grow the economy, supporting entrepreneurship, or simply being present and engaged. That shift in mindset has changed how I experience the island. It’s no longer just a place tied to memory; it’s tied to action and possibility.

A New Wave of Opportunity

What’s especially encouraging is the broader trend I’m seeing. Capital flows, new business formation, and renewed interest in Puerto Rico have created a different kind of energy—one that’s attracting people back. Friends and colleagues who once left the island in search of opportunity are returning, and many are finding real success.

That momentum matters. It creates confidence. It creates optionality.

Holding Both Caution and Optimism

I won’t pretend the past is forgotten. I still carry scars from years of living and doing business in Puerto Rico—the challenges, the bureaucracy, the uncertainty. Those experiences shape how I approach things today.

But this feels like a new cycle. One built not just on incentives or external capital, but on lived resilience and hard-earned perspective. That combination makes this moment feel different—and potentially powerful.

The Best Part: Time Together

Above all, this trip reminded me why coming back matters. Beyond economics and opportunity, it’s about people. Sharing meals, catching up with old friends, spending quality time with family—those moments don’t show up on balance sheets, but they matter more than anything else.

Being able to participate in this new chapter while reconnecting with the people who shaped me feels like a gift.

Puerto Rico still has challenges ahead, but it also has momentum. And this time, I’m excited to be part of it—not just as an observer, but as a participant.
