Conquering the Mountains: Cycling from Ibagué to Roncesvalles

(edited)

Let me begin with the numbers that tell the real story: 114.9 kilometers of distance, a massive 3,133 meters of elevation gain, and 9 hours and 59 minutes of pure grit riding from Ibagué all the way to Roncesvalles. And yes, before you ask, I stopped a million times along the way... after all, there are crazy pros out there who pull this off in 5 hours!

Don't let the peaceful look fool you. This gravel road hides brutal, steep inclines and loose rocks that test every muscle and make your whole body ache with every pedal stroke.

Deep along the route, the majestic view opens up to the Cucuana River (Rio Cucuana) winding through the deep valley, a simple reminder of the immense beauty that defines the Colombian Andes.

After nearly ten hours on the saddle, I finally rolled into Roncesvalles deep in the night. Too exhausted to look for a hotel right away, I stopped by the main square's monument dedicated to the hard-working local farmers.

The next morning, with proper daylight, I got a much better shot of the monument honoring the local farmers and the deep cattle-ranching tradition of Roncesvalles.

The town square reveals its history. Here stands the bust of Francisco de Paula Santander, a key military and political leader of Colombia's independence and the nation's first constitutional president.

No Colombian municipality is complete without the iconic colorful letters. Naturally, my trusty companion—the bike that got me here—had to pose right next to the "Yo Amo Ronces" (I Love Ronces) sign.

A quick stroll to the local market square (Plaza de Mercado) to soak in the authentic rural daily life and traditional peasant trade before the journey back.

Fueling up is mandatory! A hearty traditional breakfast of scrambled eggs, rice, arepa, bread, and a hot cup of coffee to prepare the legs for the grueling bicycle ride back to Ibagué.

That's all for this trip! I hope you enjoyed this little journey. I can't wait to share more stories and photos from the roads I explore on two wheels. Until the next ride!

Have happy days ✌
