My orchids finally bloomed (and it only happens once a year) (ENG/ESP)

And well, my mom suggested I should post photos of my orchids. She doesn't really know how Hive works, lol, she thinks it's like Facebook. But she's older now, so it's hard to explain it to her. I love her for caring about my posts, though. She just wants me to share the pretty things in the garden.

The photos I'm sharing are from January, because we're just getting into spring. My orchids only bloom at the end of the year or the beginning. After that, I don't see them flower for almost 10 or 11 months. And that's what I wanted to talk about. It feels like such a long wait every time, but when the flowers finally open, it's totally worth it.

The orchid I have is Laelia, or similar to Cattleya. It only produces a few flowers a year, so when it blooms, I get really happy. I check on them every day during those months. I water them carefully, make sure they get good light but not too much direct sun, and I talk to them sometimes. Yeah, I know that sounds silly, but I really do.

I want you to know, as you're reading this, that I'm from Cuba, a totally tropical country. This type of orchid is very common around here. Some people know it as Cattleya. Let me know — what do you call it? I'd love to learn the names people use in other places.

The color is beautiful. It's like a soft purple-pink, very bright and cheerful. When the sun hits the petals in the morning, they almost look like they're glowing. That's my favorite time to go outside and just stare at them for a while. It's a simple pleasure, but it makes my day better.

Taking care of orchids isn't hard once you understand what they need. They don't like too much water, and they need good air circulation. I keep mine in a spot where they get morning sun and shade in the afternoon. That works well for them here in Cuba. If you have orchids in a colder place, you probably have to do things differently.

Y bueno, mi mamá me sugirió que subiera fotos de mis orquídeas. Ella no sabe bien cómo funciona Hive, jaja, piensa que es como Facebook. Pero está mayor, así que cuesta explicarle. Igual la quiero porque se preocupa por mis publicaciones. Solo quiere que comparta las cosas bonitas del jardín.

Las fotos que voy a mostrar son de enero, porque estamos entrando en primavera. Mis orquídeas solo florecen a finales de año o a principios. Después de eso, no las veo echar flores en casi 10 u 11 meses. Y de eso quería hablar. La espera se siente larga cada vez, pero cuando por fin abren las flores, vale totalmente la pena.

La orquídea que tengo es Laelia, o parecida a Cattleya. Saca muy pocas flores al año, así que cuando florece, me pongo muy feliz. Las reviso todos los días durante esos meses. Las riego con cuidado, me aseguro de que tengan buena luz pero no mucho sol directo, y a veces les hablo. Sí, sé que suena tonto, pero lo hago de verdad.

Quiero que sepan, tal como me leen, que soy de Cuba, un país totalmente tropical. Este tipo de orquídea es muy común por aquí. Algunos la conocen como Cattleya. Díganme —¿cómo la conocen ustedes? Me encantaría saber los nombres que usan en otros lugares.

El color es bonito. Es como un morado rosado suave, muy brillante y alegre. Cuando el sol le da a los pétalos por la mañana, parece que brillan. Esa es mi hora favorita para salir y quedarme mirándolas un rato. Es un placer sencillo, pero me alegra el día.

Cuidar orquídeas no es difícil una vez que entiendes lo que necesitan. No les gusta mucho el agua, y necesitan buena circulación de aire. Las tengo en un lugar donde les da el sol de la mañana y sombra por la tarde. Eso les funciona bien aquí en Cuba. Si ustedes tienen orquídeas en un lugar más frío, seguramente tienen que hacer las cosas diferente.

Ha sido un placer enseñarles mi orquídea. Si llegaron hasta el final, ¿qué me recomendarían? ¿Debería hacer algo diferente para que florezcan más?
