Falling in love with a city I’ve never seen [EN/PT]

Imagining is free. And lately I’ve been taking full advantage of that privilege, because there’s a city here in Brazil that has taken over my thoughts without any ceremony. Its name is Jaraguá do Sul; it’s in the south of the country, and I’ve never been there. I don’t even know anyone who lives in that area.

The story began in a rather mundane way: me browsing YouTube, the way we do when boredom strikes or when our minds crave a distraction. It was during one of those aimless browsing sessions that it popped up. Someone had visited the city, recorded everything, and posted it there. All I know is that, before I knew it, I had already fallen in love.

Since then, I’ve become an informal researcher of Jaraguá do Sul. I watch videos of people who’ve visited, read accounts, and look for more content on every channel I find. There’s something about the city’s architecture, the way the streets are laid out, the colors of the buildings—it’s an ornamental, detailed beauty that I wasn’t used to seeing. A city that seems to have been designed with care and affection.

One detail that really got me excited was finding out that the weather there is cold.

It sounds simple, but for someone who lives where I do—in a city near the equator—it’s almost like an exotic dream. Here, the heat never lets up. Cities in this region are destined for this: strong sun, high temperatures year-round, and little chance of seeing your breath escape your mouth on a winter morning. So imagining a place where it’s actually cold, where you might need a coat and have a good reason to drink hot chocolate—that has a very special charm.

Every video I watch about Jaraguá do Sul gives me that strange feeling of longing for a place I’ve never been. As if I had already walked those streets in some dream I forgot upon waking. The residents seem proud of the city, and I understand why. There’s a visible dignity in the way it was built and maintained.

I don’t know when I’ll be able to go. It’s not in my immediate plans yet, it hasn’t made it into the budget yet, and it’s still just a wish tucked away in the drawer of my dreams. But I’m in no hurry, because part of the magic lies precisely in that: in the anticipation and the pleasure of imagining every detail before experiencing it.
And until that day comes, I’ll keep admiring Jaraguá do Sul from afar. Watching more videos before bed, dreaming of cool streets and beautiful architecture, waiting for the day when I’ll be able to say: I’ve finally arrived.

Namorando uma cidade que nunca vi

Imaginar é de graça. E ultimamente tenho aproveitado muito desse privilégio, porque existe uma cidade aqui no Brasil que tomou conta dos meus pensamentos sem nenhuma cerimônia. O nome dela é Jaraguá do Sul, fica no sul do país, e eu nunca fui até lá. Nem conheço ninguém que mora por esses lados.

A historia começou de um jeito bastante banal: eu fuçando no youtube, do jeito que a gente faz quando o tédio bate ou quando a cabeça pede distração. Foi numa dessas navegações sem destino que ela apareceu. Alguém tinha ido visitar a cidade, gravado tudo, e postado por lá. Só sei que, quando percebi, já tinha me apaixonado.

Desde então, virei uma pesquisadora informal de Jaraguá do Sul. Assisto vídeos de pessoas que foram visitar, leio relatos, e busco mais conteúdos em cada canal que encontro. Tem algo na arquitetura da cidade, na forma como as ruas se organizam, nas cores das construções, é uma beleza ornamental, detalhada, que eu não estava acostumada a ver. Uma cidade que parece ter sido desenhada com cuidado e carinho.

Um detalhe que me deixou especialmente animada foi descobrir que o clima por lá é frio.

Parece simples, mas pra quem mora onde eu moro, numa cidade próxima à linha do equador, isso é quase um sonho exótico. Aqui o calor não dar trégua. Cidades nessa faixa têm esse destino: sol forte, temperatura alta o ano todo e poucas chances de ver o hálito escapar pela boca numa manhã de inverno. Então imaginar um lugar onde o frio existe de verdade, onde se pode precisar de um casaco e tomar um chocolate quente com razão, isso tem um charme todo especial.

Cada vídeo que assisto sobre Jaraguá do Sul me dá aquela sensação estranha de saudade de um lugar onde nunca estive. Como se eu já tivesse andado por aquelas ruas em algum sonho que esqueci ao acordar. Os moradores parecem orgulhosos da cidade e eu entendo o porquê. Tem uma dignidade visível no modo como ela foi construída e mantida.

Não sei quando vou conseguir ir. Ainda não está nos planos imediatos, ainda não entrou no orçamento e ainda é só um desejo guardado na gaveta dos sonhos. Mas eu não tenho pressa, porque parte da magia está exatamente nisso: na antecipação e no prazer de imaginar cada detalhe antes de viver.
E enquanto esse dia não chega, eu continuo namorando Jaraguá do Sul de longe. Assistindo mais video antes de dormir, sonhando com ruas frias e arquitetura bonita, esperando pelo dia em que vou poder dizer: finalmente cheguei.
