🇬🇧 I recently shared the story of our crossing of the Jama Pass with our friend David, a powerful moment that took us from one side of the Andes to the other — quite literally from Chile to Argentina. Chile and Argentina share one of the longest land borders in the world: around 5,300 km, almost entirely defined by the imposing presence of the Andes. Jama is one of the northernmost border posts, but there are more than forty others, all spectacular because each one involves crossing the mountain range. Truthfully, one should travel following a kind of north–south sinusoidal line, hopping from one country to the other via the passes, as each offers a unique landscape.

🇬🇧 But back to our route of the moment: the descent from the Jama Pass down to the village of Purmamarca. It’s one of those journeys that stay engraved in the memory of travellers — even more so when you live it on a motorbike. After crossing the border at over 4,200 metres, you slowly tip into the Argentine region of Jujuy, a grandiose landscape where every kilometre shifts the light, texture, and colours. Up there, the air remains icy, the wind fierce, and the road twists between high plateaus swept by gusts. You still enjoy high-altitude scenery: slender vicuñas, photogenic salt lakes, winding mountain roads…

🇬🇧 Approaching Purmamarca feels like slowly entering another world. The altitude drops, the air softens, and vegetation timidly reappears. The hills take on ochre tones — a foretaste of the famous Seven-Coloured Mountain, a geological jewel of the region. You sense the arrival of a living, profoundly Andean village. Giant cacti rise, adobe houses appear, and finally the cobbled streets of Purmamarca come into view, as if laid at the foot of a gigantic natural backdrop. We are in the Jujuy province, so characteristic of northwest Argentina.

🇬🇧 Arriving in this village by motorbike brings a special emotion. After the cold, silent immensity of the Jama Pass, Purmamarca feels almost intimate, warm, vibrant. The scent of warm earth charms us; the craft stalls, the colourful fabrics, the smiles — everything contrasts instantly with the rigour of the altiplano. It’s the perfect stop to rest, admire the shifting light on the mountain at sunrise or sunset, and feel the spectacular transition between the high-altitude desert and the lively Andean valleys.

🇬🇧 It is here that we finally join the famous Route 40, Argentina’s equivalent to the American Route 66. This legendary road, stretching from the north to the south of the country, already hints at all the discoveries awaiting us in Argentina. It carries the true scent of adventure.

Very pleasant reading. Many years ago I read a lot of lamas and their close relatives and until now I have forgotten about Vikunia. Are they probably the smallest representatives of this family?
Yes, I think they are althought the guanaco is not very hight also. I am not sure.
I checked and actually vikunia. Very cute animals. I envy meeting them in the natural environment. Regards :)

The extraordinary cracked mountains and remote cool environment of the Argentine city are fascinating and attractive. The beautiful deer roaming around is even more attractive. Ruta has shared the great beauty of the city by traveling a long distance on a motorcycle. I am very happy to see more beautiful winding roads. I always wish you success in your travels.
