Today we unexpectedly got a free hour, and without overthinking it, we headed straight to the beach right after school. When you’ve got a camera in your hands and a kid full of energy next to you, you don’t waste moments like that.
Lately, I’ve been carrying my favorite lens — Sony FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS — and honestly, I just wanted to find something alive to shoot. Not shells, not waves… something that moves, reacts, disappears.
And we got lucky.
Meet our unexpected model — Mr. Krabs 😄

This is a horned ghost crab (Ocypode ceratophthalmus). These guys are absolute beach sprinters — they can run up to 2–3 meters per second, dig burrows as deep as a meter, and prefer to stay active during twilight or nighttime. During the day, they hide from the heat and, probably, from annoying creatures like us.
They’re also not picky eaters at all — scavengers by nature. Small mollusks, organic leftovers, even tiny animals if they get the chance. In Thailand, by the way, they sometimes end up in som tam (green papaya salad). After boiling, the meat is extracted and added to the dish. Didn’t expect that, right?

The funny thing is — if you just walk along the beach спокойно, you won’t even notice them. They blend perfectly into the sand. Maybe that’s exactly why they’re called ghost crabs.
But the moment they feel vibrations from your steps — they’re gone.
We had to run. A lot.
My son took the role of the “driver” — pushing them from one side, while I rushed in from the other, almost dragging the camera through the sand, trying to catch a sharp frame before the crab vanished into its hole.
It probably looked ridiculous from the outside.
Some Thai locals sitting in the shade were watching us — two foreigners running back and forth along the shoreline, shouting something and poking cameras into the sand like maniacs.
I can almost hear what they were thinking:
“These damn farangs have completely lost it…” 😄
Meanwhile, the crabs, with their wide, confused eyes, had no idea where to run. Not all of them managed to disappear in time.

It turned out to be one of those simple, chaotic, and genuinely fun moments you don’t plan — but remember.
No pressure, no perfect conditions — just movement, laughter, and a bit of hunting spirit.
We had a great time.
And now… new plans are already forming.
Who’s next? 👀
See you in the next hunt.
