Büyükada is the largest of the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul and it is famous for its preserved historical architecture

Walking through its quiet streets feels like a trip back in time because the island is largely carfree which lets you really take in the beauty of these old wooden mansions and stone villas

Many of these buildings date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when they were built as summer residences for the elite of the Ottoman Empire

You can see influences from various architectural styles including Ottoman and Victorian design which gives the island its unique and eclectic look

The bright colors and overgrown gardens you see here are very typical of the island's charm where nature and old buildings seem to grow together over the years

It is also a place with a very layered history since it once served as a place of exile for royalty and later as a home for diverse communities

Today it remains a peaceful escape from the busy city life of Istanbul and a place where you can still find traces of a bygone era tucked away in every corner
