🇫🇷 J’ai écrit quelques fois déjà sur ce pays qui m’aura marqué sur plusieurs aspects. Les gens et leur accueil, la simplicité et la dureté de la vie, l’avifaune, et la faune en général, le fleuve comme artère du pays… Une autre composante du pays m’a laissé à maintes reprises dans l’admiration ou plutôt une contemplation passive de laquelle on n’arrive pas à se retirer, les baobabs.

The people and their welcome, the simplicity and harshness of life, the avifauna, and wildlife in general, the river as an artery of the country... Another component of the country has repeatedly left me in admiration or rather passive contemplation from which one cannot withdraw, the baobabs.

🇫🇷 Pour vous faire une présentation rapide de cette espèce d’arbre, il en existe 8 espèces dans le monde dont 7 se trouvent à Madagascar. L’Australie a le luxe d’héberger une 8e espèce à elle seule, et l’Afrique protège la plus répandue d’entre elle, également présente à Madagascar : le baobab Africain. C’est une espèce de baobab que l’on retrouve de l’Est à l’Ouest de l’Afrique et qui est aussi présente sur l’archipel des Comores et à Madagascar. Ce n’est pas l’espèce qui vit le plus longtemps, mais elle atteint tout de même quelques centaines d’années de longévité. Sur l’île e Mayotte, le plus vieux de ces arbres encore en vie a été estimé à 420 ans.

🇫🇷 Adansonia digitata, puisqu’il a été décidé de nommer la nature par des mots latin, est un arbre qui peut atteindre 25-30m de hauteur et avoir une circonférence dépassant les 15m pour les arbres les plus vieux. Paradoxalement, ce géant possède des racines assez courtes qui ne s’enfoncent que peu profondément en terre. Cela lui coûte bien souvent des chutes accidentelles dès que le sol devient trop meuble ou le vent trop violent. Mais cet arbre a tout prévu, même de repartir de l’une de ses branches une fois tombé au sol. Immortel donc, ou presque... Un vrai botaniste vous parlerai ici de ses fleurs, ses fruits, son écorce gorgé d’eau, mais je n’en suis pas un. Je vais donc plutôt parler de ce qui m’a fasciné en Gambie.

🇫🇷 Cet arbre a pour habitude de pousser ça et là, de façon assez clairsemée. En tout cas, je l’ai connu comme cela dans l’archipel des Comores et surtout sur l’île Française de Mayotte. Mais en Gambie, l’histoire est tout autre. Pour la première fois en 20 ans de vie en compagnie de cet arbre, je suis entré dans une véritable forêt de baobabs ! Lorsque je dis une forêt, il faut imaginer quelques dizaines de ces géants regroupés sur un espace grand comme deux ou trois terrains de foot. Des troncs de 25m de haut et plusieurs mètres de large tout autour de moi. On pourra plutôt parler ici de savanes de Baobabs. C’est impressionnant. La sensation de siéger au milieu du conseil des Dieux. Des savanes comme décrites ici, il y en a régulièrement le long du fleuve Gambie. Leur reflet dans l’eau du fleuve est extraordinaire, je vous laisse apprécier les photos.

🇫🇷 Ici, les gens utilisent le baobab comme une ressource importante. Des fruits, ils tirent les graines pour en faire de la poudre et s’en servir de farine pour le plat local, Mpotéo. D’autres traitements de ces graines sont également faits, comme des jus. De l’écorce, ils fabriquent du cordage qu’ils utilisent traditionnellement pour lier leur toit ou attacher le bétail. Les feuilles sont utilisées dans la cuisine locale. Enfin, plusieurs applications de médecine traditionnelle en sont faites pour traiter les maux d’estomac ou les fièvres.

Mais bon, pour moi, ce sera le souvenir de ces géants se reflétant sur la surface du fleuve qui restera l’aspect le plus remarquable de cet arbre emblématique nous ayant accompagné dans ce voyage du premier au dernier jour.

But, for me, it will be the memory of these giants reflecting on the surface of the river that will remain the most remarkable aspect of this emblematic tree having accompanied us on this journey from the first to the last day.
