As I mentioned in my last post, my wife and I visited Budapest over the Easter weekend. After sharing my photos of the Parliament building here last week, today I’m focusing on the Liberty Bridge. I’d been planning a long exposure shot of this bridge for quite some time. Of all the bridges in Budapest, this is my favorite:
Wie schon im letzten Post beschrieben, besuchten meine Frau und ich am Osterwochenende Budapest. Nachdem ich hier in der letzte Woche meine Fotos vom Parlament zeigte, geht es heute um die Freiheitsbrücke. Für dieses Motiv hatte ich schon lange eine Langzeitbelichtung geplant. Von allen Brücken in Budapest, mag ich diese am liebsten:

The Liberty Bridge is one of the main crossings over the Danube in Budapest, connecting Gellért Hill on the Buda side with the area around the Great Market Hall on the Pest side in the southern part of the city center. At approximately 333 meters long, it is one of the shorter Danube bridges in Budapest. It was opened in 1896 to mark the millennium celebration of the Hungarian conquest. The bridge consists of a steel structure in the Historicist style with distinct Art Nouveau influences. The riveted joints on the multi-layered steel sections look particularly interesting and give the bridge its unique character.
Particularly striking are the green color scheme and the decorative elements on the bridge towers, which feature, among other things, the mythical Turul bird, a symbol of the Hungarian nation.
Die Freiheitsbrücke ist eine der zentralen Donauquerungen in Budapest und verbindet im Süden der Innenstadt den Gellértberg auf der Buda-Seite mit der Gegend rund um die Große Markthalle auf der Pest-Seite. Mit einer Länge von rund 333 Metern gehört sie zu den kürzeren Donaubrücken in Budapest. Sie wurde im Jahr 1896 anlässlich der Tausendjahrfeier der ungarischen Landnahme eröffnet. Die Brücke besteht aus einer Stahlkonstruktion im Stil des Historismus mit deutlichen Einflüssen des Jugendstils. Die genieteten Verbindungen an den mehrfach geschichteten Stahlprofilen sehen besonders interessant aus und geben der Brücke den speziellen Charakter.
Besonders auffällig sind die grüne Farbgebung sowie die dekorativen Elemente an den Brückentürmen, die unter anderem den mythischen Turul-Vogel zeigen, ein Symbol der ungarischen Nation.

To prepare for the planned camera rotation, I first had to adjust the rotation tool. It was still set for the NIKON Z5, which I usually use for light painting. To do this, I spent an hour in the bathroom, using the groove of a tile spacer to adjust the tool so that the camera would rotate precisely around the center of the lens. Since the hotel is located right next to the bridge, I was able to transport the camera, tripod, and rotation tool—all assembled and newly adjusted—and set them up directly at the end of the tram stop, facing the bridge.
Zur Vorbereitung der geplanten Kamerarotation musste ich zuerst das Rotationstool justieren. Es war noch auf die NIKON Z5 eingestellt, die ich gewöhnlich zum Lightpainten benutze. Dafür verbrachte ich eine Stunde im Badezimmer, um mit Hilfe der Fuge eines Fliesenkreuzes das Tool so einzustellen, dass die Kamera wirklich um den Mittelpunkt des Objektivs rotiert. Da sich das Hotel direkt in unmittelbarer Nähe der Brücke befindet, konnte ich die Kamera, Stativ und Rotationstool im zusammengebauten und neu justierten Zustand transportieren und direkt am Ende der Straßenbahnhaltestelle in Blickrichtung zur Brücke platzieren.

Camera Rotation 120°
During the day, it’s a very popular spot for photography. Even in the evening, photographers and curious onlookers would occasionally join me there. This led to interesting conversations with immigrants from Venezuela and globetrotters from Australia. Some photographers would simply set up their tripods next to mine without saying a word, take their picture, and disappear without a word.
Tagsüber ist dieser Standort ein sehr begehrter Fotospot. Auch am Abend gesellten sich hin und wieder Fotografen und neugierige Zuschauer zu mir an diesen Standort. Dies führte zu interessanten Gesprächen mit Einwanderern aus Venezuela oder Weltreisenden aus Australien. Manche Fotografen platzierten auch nur stumm ihr Stativ neben meinen, schossen ihr Bild und verschwanden wortlos. Wahrscheinlich wollten sie mich bei meiner Arbeit nicht stören.

The cover image was created by rotating the camera 180° around the optical axis. I rotated the following images by 120° and 45°. I covered the lower half of the lens with a black cloth while taking the photo. The entire lens was covered during the rotation.
Das Titelbild entstand durch eine Kamerarotation um 180° um die optische Achse. Die folgenden Bilder rotierte ich um 120° und 45°. Die untere Hälfte des Objektivs deckte ich während der Aufnahme mit einem schwarzen Tuch zu. Während der Rotation war das gesamte Objektiv abgedeckt.

I’ve always wanted to capture the trams as a trail of light against the bridge. That was actually my original concept for this shot. All you need is a camera, a tripod, something to cover the lens, and a lot of patience. On holidays, the trams don’t seem to run as often in the evenings. On my first attempt, someone must have stepped on my tripod, because the bridge came out blurry in the photo. So I started the whole process a second time. The exposure time was about 20 minutes. You can’t track that exactly with the Olympus in Live Composite mode. I chose Live Composite mode over Bulb mode because the images would have been completely noisy with this camera in Bulb mode during such a long exposure.
Die Straßenbahnen wollte ich schon immer vor der Brücke transparent als Lichtspur ins Bild bringen. Das war eigentlich meine ursprüngliche Bildidee für das Motiv. Dafür benötigt man nur die Kamera, ein Stativ, etwas um das Objektiv abzudecken und viel Geduld. An Feiertagen fahren die Straßenbahnen Abends scheinbar nicht mehr so oft. Beim ersten Versuch muss wohl jemand an mein Stativ getreten haben, denn die Brücke wurde auf dem Bild unscharf dargestellt. Also startete ich das Ganze ein zweites Mal. Die Belichtungszeit betrug ca. 20 Minuten. So genau kann man das bei der Olympus im LiveComposite nicht nachvollziehen. Den LiveComposite - Mode habe ich dem Bulb - Mode vorgezogen, weil die Bilder bei dieser langen Belichtungszeit mit dieser Kamera im Bulb - Mode völlig verrauscht gewesen währen.
