What Benches Are For

There are certain things you come to appreciate much more as you get older. For instance, the simple ability to do absolutely nothing without the slightest sense of guilt.

A sunny summer day makes this kind of idleness especially delightful. That’s exactly why it feels so right to sit on a bench on a day like this: to feel the warmth of sun-warmed wood, to watch the leaves swaying, or to observe people passing by, each absorbed in their own lives. Not necessarily to rest, and certainly not in search of any profound thoughts. Simply because it happens to be a good day.

Perhaps this is what benches were originally invented for.
