Well, it snowed up on Mount Hood! In September! It is not entirely unusual, but it’s certainly not something that I am used to. A week ago, it was in the 80s(Fahrenheit) down in town; but my workplace is about 5000 feet above our tiny little town, so the weather is obviously drastically different. That being said, it certainly has been cold at night; dropping down to around 40 degrees. With the recent much-needed rain, that translates to snow around the 7000 foot elevation mark.
Yesterday I had taken the bus up to work; something I’m trying to make a more consistent routine. The problem is, the bus only runs every 2 hours; so either it’s I get to work right on time, with the possibility of being late, or two hours early. I try to choose the latter; so that I can charge my devices and take a shower when possible.
I was asked if I could stay late to close the shop, to which I eagerly agreed. I need the hours; if for nothing else to maintain a weekly average that will allow me to qualify for health insurance. This is normally an easy task; however, being a town that thrives off of tourism, we are in our “slow months”, and shifts and hours get frequently cut. So, I realized that with my changing schedule, it made a hell of a lot more sense for me to walk down the mountain than to wait an hour and a half for the bus.
The town also pretty much shuts down at 8pm, so I had to make it to a store beforehand. So, I pretty much ended up running down the 5 mile trail back “home”. Once I made it to Chevron, I realized I didn’t even need anything; it’s just a compulsion I have to have the option. So I bought my Gatorade and spent the last daylight I had aimlessly wandering around the town. The bears are out in full force, so I ended up turning around at some rattling trash cans to give them some space.
It’s nice to me that an average day is turning out to be 20k here. Without even really trying. I didn’t run yesterday, I didn’t (intentionally) hike, and I still well cleared my goal. Keep moving friends!
