The oldest Museum in Puglia region (South Italy)

The Sigismondo Castromediano Archaeological Museum is the oldest museum in the Puglia region, and I was fortunate enough to visit it during my last stay in Lecce.
It's a gem for all tourists who want to discover the Messapian and Roman roots of the Salento area.

Il Museo Archeologico Sigismondo Castromediano è il più antico museo della regione Puglia e ho avuto la fortuna di visitarlo durante il mio ultimo soggiorno a Lecce.
È una perla per tutti i turisti che vogliono scoprire le radici messapiche e romane della zona del Salento.

This museum's unique name comes from the patriotic duke who founded it in 1868.
What struck me most was the atmosphere that surrounds the walls of this building; it truly feels like stepping back in time.
The collection of artifacts begins in prehistory and continues through the Messapian and Roman periods.
Il nome particolare di questo museo si deve al duca patriota che lo fondò nel 1868.
La cosa che mi ha colpito di più è l’atmosfera che circonda le mura di questo edificio, sembra di stare davvero in un altro secolo.
La collezione di reperti inizia dalla preistoria e prosegue con l’età messapica e l’età romana.

The main highlights are the Attic and Apulian vases, made of ceramics with black and red figures that tell the stories of myths and heroes.
These vases bear witness to the commercial and cultural exchanges that took place between Salento and Greece.
You can also admire numerous Messapian inscriptions that describe a language that still remains a mystery to scientists today.
I protagonisti principali sono i vasi attici e apuli, costituiti da ceramiche con figure nere e rosse che narrano le storie dei miti e degli eroi.
Questi vasi testimoniano gli scambi commerciali e culturali che avvenivano tra il Salento e la Grecia.
Si possono ammirare anche numerose iscrizioni messapiche che raccontano una lingua che al giorno d’oggi è ancora misteriosa per gli studiosi.

The tour concludes with Roman statuary, particularly the splendid marbles that decorated the city's ancient theater and amphitheater.
Upstairs, there is also an art gallery, with more modern works and examples of Lecce Baroque.

Il percorso si conclude con la statuaria romana e, in particolare, gli splendidi marmi che decoravano l’antico teatro e l’anfiteatro della città.
Al piano superiore è anche presente una Pinacoteca, con opere più moderne ed esempi di barocco leccese.
Sono molto felice di aver visitato il cuore della storia pugliese e spero di essere stata in grado di trasmettere la bellezza di questo museo. Grazie per avermi seguita!
