Cát Bà to największa z 366 wysp archipelagu. Postanowiliśmy, że będzie to nasze miejsce wypadowe do zwiedzania zatoki Ha Long. Chcieliśmy też tam trochę odpocząć. W planach był również trekking po dżungli, ale wiadomo jak to z planami bywa.

Na Cát Bà dotarliśmy nocnym autobusem z Sapy. Jechaliśmy około 10 godzin. Tym razem lepiej znieśliśmy podróż. Może dlatego, że nie wszystko było już nowe i mieliśmy więcej czasu na sen. W nocy tylko słyszeliśmy jak przewijają się różni ludzie. Prawdopodobnie kierowca zabierał pasażerów na czarno. Niestety tym razem nie było możliwości naładowania telefonu.

Na wyspę dotarliśmy wcześnie rano i poszliśmy do hotelu New Horizon Hotel Pani w recepcji była miła i pozwoliła nam na wcześniejsze zameldowanie bez dodatkowej opłaty. Dali nam też odrobinę większy pokój. Co ciekawe w pokoju była łazienka, która znajdowała się nie za ścianą tylko za szybą. Na szczęście była też wewnątrz roleta.

Cát Bà is the largest of the 366 islands in the archipelago. We decided that it would be our base for exploring Ha Long Bay. We also wanted to relax there a bit. We had planned to go trekking in the jungle, but you know how plans turn out.

We reached Cát Bà by night bus from Sapa. The journey took about 10 hours. This time, we coped better with the trip. Maybe it was because everything was no longer new and we had more time to sleep. At night, we could only hear different people coming and going. The driver was probably taking passengers illegally. Unfortunately, this time there was no way to charge our phones.

We arrived on the island early in the morning and went to the New Horizon Hotel . The lady at the reception was nice and allowed us to check in early at no extra charge. They also gave us a slightly larger room. Interestingly, the room had a bathroom, which was not behind a wall but behind glass. Fortunately, there was also a blind inside.

Generalnie hotel był czysty, dość tani. Śniadania może nie były najlepsze, ale zawsze dostawaliśmy talerz owoców, kawę i herbatę bez ograniczeń.

Overall, the hotel was clean and quite cheap. The breakfasts may not have been the best, but we always got a plate of fruit and unlimited coffee and tea.

Najczęściej zamawialiśmy naleśnika z czekoladą i do niego pakowaliśmy owoce. Niestety naleśnik był dość tłusty, ale inne opcje nie były dużo lepsze.

We usually ordered pancakes with chocolate and added fruit. Unfortunately, the pancakes were quite greasy, but the other options weren't much better.

Jak widać szału nie było... zwłaszcza, że dżemu starczyło ledwo na jednego tosta.

Wzięliśmy prysznic, odpoczęliśmy chwilę i poszliśmy szukać miejsca na śniadanie, bo pierwszego dnia nie mieliśmy w hotelu. W ten sposób trafiliśmy do restauracji The Healing Kitchen. Zazwyczaj lubię jadać w miejscach dla lokalsów, ale miałam wrażenie, że Cat Ba to głównie hotele i restauracje dla turystów. Tam właśnie właściciel zaproponował nam lepszą cenę na wycieczkę po zatoce Ha Long. śniadanie też było bardzo dobre i odważyłam się na koktajl z mango i kostkami lodu, których zawsze unikałam, ale tu zapewnił, że mają filtrowaną, bezpieczną wodę.

We took a shower, rested for a while and went to look for a place to have breakfast, because we didn't have it at the hotel on the first day. That's how we ended up at The Healing Kitchen restaurant. I usually like to eat in places for locals, but I had the impression that Cat Ba was mainly hotels and restaurants for tourists. It was there that the owner offered us a better price for a trip around Ha Long Bay. The breakfast was also very good, and I dared to try a mango cocktail with ice cubes, which I always avoided, but here he assured me that they had filtered, safe drinking water.

Na kawę chcieliśmy pójść do lokalnej kawiarni, ale totalnie się nie dogadaliśmy i dostaliśmy typową mocną czarną kawę z kostkami lodu.

Postanowiliśmy dojść na plażę. Okazało się, że właśnie tam budują ogromny kompleks turystyczny. Nie wiem czy można tam było wejść, ale my poszliśmy. Dużo budynków już stało, w innych trwały prace. I totalne pustki. Pomyślałam sobie, że to pewnie ostatni moment, żeby tak spacerować bez ludzi w tym miejscu, bo kiedyś tu będzie mnóstwo restauracji, pubów, sklepów, hoteli...

We wanted to go to a local café for coffee, but we couldn't agree on anything and ended up with typical strong black coffee with ice cubes.

We decided to walk to the beach. It turned out that a huge tourist complex was being built there. I don't know if it was possible to go inside, but we went anyway. Many buildings were already standing, while others were still under construction. And it was completely deserted. I thought to myself that this was probably the last moment to walk around without people in this place, because one day there would be lots of restaurants, pubs, shops, hotels...

Trochę pospacerowaliśmy po tym dziwnym, jakby opuszczonym miejscu i nagle zaczęło padać. Stanęliśmy pod jakimś małym daszkiem, ale potem postanowiliśmy przenieść się bliżej głównej ulicy. I była to bardzo dobra decyzja ponieważ nagle okropnie lunęło. Nie udało nam się dotrzeć do żadnej kawiarni, więc schroniliśmy się pod jakimś dachem. W jednej chwili jedna z ulic zamieniła się w mały potok z wodą do łydki. Patrzyłam na lokalsów, ale oni nie byli przejęci tym faktem, co mnie uspokoiło.

We walked around this strange, seemingly deserted place for a while, and suddenly it started raining. We stood under a small canopy, but then decided to move closer to the main street. It was a very good decision because suddenly it started pouring. We couldn't reach any café, so we took shelter under a roof. In an instant, one of the streets turned into a small stream with water up to our calves. I looked at the locals, but they weren't bothered by it, which calmed me down.

Ja obserwowałam w 1997 roku wodę wpływającą na moją ulicę. Najpierw cienką strużką, a potem już tylko patrzyłam jak poziom wody wzrasta w szybkim tempie. Dlatego uruchomił się we mnie jakiś lęk. Gdy tylko przestało mocno padać przenieśliśmy się do kawiarni NamPhuong Coffee. I była to bardzo dobra decyzja, bo podczas pobytu tylko tam chodziliśmy na kawę, ciasto bananowe i rogalika.

In 1997, I watched water flowing into my street during a flood. At first, it was just a thin stream, but then I watched as the water level rose rapidly. This triggered a sense of fear in me. As soon as the heavy rain stopped, we moved to NamPhuong Coffee. It was a very good decision, because during our stay we only went there for coffee, banana cake and croissants.

Spróbowaliśmy kawy z jajkiem i kawy z solą, która nie do końca nam odpowiadała. Ale kawa z jajkiem była bardzo dobra.

Wieczorem poszliśmy jeszcze coś zjeść do Banh Mi Cat Ba. Mała knajpa, mniej turystyczna, z dobrym jedzeniem, chociaż jak dla mnie też trochę za tłustym. W szklance jest "ginger tee", czyli napar z imbiru z cukrem.

In the evening, we went to Banh Mi Cat Ba for something to eat. It's a small, less touristy eatery with good food, although a bit too greasy for my taste. The glass contains ‘ginger tea’, which is ginger infusion with sugar.

Kolejny dzień to miał być trekking, ale pogoda miała być nie pewna, więc nie bardzo chciałam chodzić w deszczu po dżungli i ostatecznie zrezygnowaliśmy. Niestety nie ma publicznego transportu do najbliższych jaskiń, a my nie mamy opanowanej jazdy na skuterze, więc zrezygnowaliśmy z tej atrakcji. Najpierw poszliśmy na pobliskie wzgórze z widokiem na zatokę i port.

The next day was supposed to be trekking, but the weather was uncertain, so I didn't really want to walk in the rain through the jungle, and we eventually gave up. Unfortunately, there is no public transport to the nearest caves, and we are not proficient at riding a scooter, so we gave up on this attraction. First, we went to a nearby hill overlooking the bay and the harbour.

Postanowiliśmy spędzić ten dzień tak jak to robią ludzie na wakacjach i pójść na plażę. Oczywiście nie na jedną tylko zrobiliśmy spacer po wszystkich trzech. Ale też daliśmy sobie trochę czasu na nicnierobienie.

We decided to spend the day like people do on holiday and go to the beach. Of course, we didn't just go to one, we walked along all three. But we also gave ourselves some time to do nothing.

Leżaki na plaży ani nie były za darmo ani nie zachęcały, żeby na nich leżeć.

Czy Cát Bà jest dobre na dłuższy pobyt? Hmm, nie wiem. Dla mnie 3 dni były wystarczające. Pewnie zależy od tego co chce się robić.

Is Cát Bà a good place for a longer stay? Hmm, I don't know. For me, three days were enough. I suppose it depends on what you want to do.
