Peterborough, Victoria, Australia.
There is not much in Peterborough, a small town on Victoria's Great Ocean Road. I think that is what made me like it, in the short time we were there. Apparently, it was named after some Doctors friend "Peter" who followed the Curdies river from his inland homestead. Funny how there are many towns called Peterborough all over the world. Surely, they could have come up with something a bit more local and original. After it got named, it took a shipwreck before the town got big enough to get properly established and even now it is just a holiday and fishing village. Three hours from Melbourne does not seem that far by Australian standards but I suppose it is enough to make it feel pretty isolated. I get the feeling it won't be too long now before it is full of high-rise buildings like the Gold Coast back near home.
The James Irvine Memorial. After emigrating from Ireland in 1848 with his parents, he became the caretaker of the first holiday home in area and had greatly influence in the early hospitality industry in Peterborough. Tragically he was swept away and died while trying to cross the river in 1919. I don't think I would be trying to cross any river especially at his age.
Such a nice beach and so many big tourist attractions nearby, I wonder whether this place might be a good investment spot. A retirement location with a nice little Air BnB place close to the beach.
