Imagin being shipwrecked here! then having to climb the cliffs and walk to get help. That is exactly what 19-year-old Thomas Pearce did back in 1878. He was working on the clipper Loch Ard as an apprentice when the ship got into trouble after a three-month journey from England. Only 2 survived out of the 54 passengers and crew. There were a few gravestones around the walking track. Young Thomas was hailed a hero for also helping Eva Carmichael ashore. I suppose it was all just in a day’s work back then. Driving along this coastline highlighted shipwrecks and this sort of disaster seemed a lot more common back then and taking on any sort of adventure or trip must have come with a lot more risk and unknowns. I remember visiting this place with my parents, when I was young and learning the story, I sort of had forgotten about it until this recent trip. I like the way it has jogged so many memories.

You can just make out the staircase in the centre of frame. I have walked down it and along the beach many years ago, but it was closed and under repair on this trip. Which was sort of good as I would have been very tempted to do all the things and walk to the bottom again but as always there are so many things to try and fit into each and every day.
