Blue Lake, Mount Gambier, South Australia.
Blue lake in Mount Gambier has been a popular tourist stop for a long time. I remember stopping here 30 odd years ago when I was driving around Australia in my little Toyota Corolla station wagon with a couple of friends. I don't remember much from the trip, that far back, other than I was surprised that the water in this crater lake was indeed very blue. I am always very skeptical as usually most or at least some of these types of tourist attractions are only worthwhile when there are ideal weather or environmental conditions. I am happy to report that the blue lake has been worth the visit, the three times I have been there and one was even in the rain. They reckon this extinct volcano lake stays blue because of a limestone layer and the remains of marine organisms over millions of years. After reading that I was then wondering if it was a good idea to be actually drinking from the local water supply as it is pumped from this very lake. I am also happy to report that the water tasted fine and left will no side effects, that we know off.Β

The old train line is now a trail trail.
The Green Lake is nearby but not as spectacular
They even have their own parkrun, we will have to try and make it back again on a Saturday morning.
I ran most of the course any way.

You have a great time travelling in this popular tourist spot.. beautiful capture of Blue lake spots..
I couldn't make it this time of the year.I went there 2 years ago, and Blue Lake looked beautiful at one time glance. That's super cool that you opportunized the circular track considering the weather. cool stuff.
Considering the water, locals prefer filtered water, and not tap water, which is usually common here in Australia.

Wow! Thank you for introducing us to this Blue Lake in Mount Gambier. Its intense blue color is truly extraordinary. I love the tranquility of the place, ideal for walks and relaxing moments immersed in nature. At least from the photos and your story, this seems to be evident. From a little research I did online, the intense color of the Blue Lake is due to a combination of physical, chemical, and environmental factors. The lake water is extremely clean and free of particles. Light absorption is a physical phenomenon that plays a key role in the color of this lake. Water absorbs red and yellow wavelengths more, while reflecting blue ones. The clearer the water, the more evident this effect becomes. Great post, and thanks again for showing us this beautiful place.

I'd heard it was very blue. I'd seen photos. But I always wonder, with very colourful things like this, if it had just been photoshopped to LOOK more blue. But... it was !INDEED very blue! !LOL
