Bay of Islands, Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia.
The Bay of Islands was @consciouscat 's first ever glimpse of the great ocean road which was after we had left Warrnambool the night before. It goes from Allensford and the way to Torquay in the southwest part of Victoria. We did not see any of the wildlife pictured but the eroded limestone cliffs were spectacular, just the way I remember them from years before. This part of the world is so flat at the top of the cliffs, all the erosion must be making the Australian mainland smaller by the day and maybe this is where all the great sand on our Queensland, beaches comes from.
The great ocean road coastline is 243 kilometers long. The road accessing all this amazing coastal scenery was built by 3000 returned servicemen after World War one. Progress was slow at roughly 3 kilometres per month. It must have been tough work in the old days. It has also seen more than 200 shipwrecks over the years. That is like one per year though I hope the average is slowing down now with all the safety and technology.
