BEYOND THE MAIN ROAD

Kopia – Whispers (1).jpg

I’ve been to Romania many times already. This summer while heading toward Călărași, which is almost on the other side of the country, I had to drive a part of my route on national roads.

From a driver’s perspective, this stretch is a bit demanding. The road is narrow, steep and very twisty. It takes more focus and more energy. But at the same time it offers something you never get on a highway: real views. You pass through villages, forests, fields and hills. You get to see small details of local life that would otherwise go unnoticed. And that is why I really like the loadings to Calarasi.

One of those details was this little church — BISERICA SFANTUL NICOLAE, located in Balota, standing just a few meters from the road. I had noticed it before while driving this way, but never had the time to stop. In June 2025 I finally did.

The church is modest, quietly aged, with twin towers and a slightly faded charm that made it feel timeless. It’s surrounded by a cemetery and that always catches my attention. I’ve long been fascinated by cemeteries in different countries. There’s something deeply human in seeing how each culture treats memory, space, grief and peace. Romanian cemeteries, like this one, are often full of flowers, carved wooden crosses and small fenced family plots. They feel close and personal.

The moment I stepped out of the truck, I knew this was worth the stop.
I took a few minutes to walk around and take some photos.

Although modest in size, Biserica Sfântul Nicolae in Balota has stood for generations as a quiet witness to the life of the local community. Like many rural churches in Romania, it served not only as a place of worship, but also as a central point for village gatherings, traditions and memories.

Dating back to the 19th century, the church reflects a simple but deeply rooted Orthodox architectural style, with twin bell towers and hand-painted religious icons inside. Its cemetery, resting beside it, holds the stories of those who lived and died here — a reminder that places like this are not forgotten, just quietly present.

Wymaga więcej skupienia i energii.

Otacza go cmentarz – a to zawsze przykuwa moją uwagę.

Kościół pochodzi z XIX wieku i reprezentuje prosty, ale głęboko zakorzeniony styl prawosławny, z dwiema wieżami i ręcznie malowanymi ikonami wewnątrz.
