Jharokha

Meaning: A Jharokha is a stone windows inside palaces overlooking markets or courts.

Jharokhas are the most important and the most beautiful architectural features of Rajasthan (western desert state of India). It is more than an ordinary window, it connects the interior of a palace with the outside establishments. Mostly found in the Palaces, Forts, Havelis etc. Jharokhas combine artistic beauty with practical functioning like ventilation, shade, privacy and the enjoyment of view. Specially in Rajasthan's Palaces, they became an important symbols of royal life, allowing rulers and members of the royal households to observe and participate in the daily routine.

Rajasthani jharokas are created through a combination of structural form, carved ornament and surface decoration. The main difference comes from the way the opening projects from the wall. Like the shape of its arch and the treatment of its support.

Some are built as small balconies and others are more enclosed with the roof.

In many Rajasthani buildings, stone is shaped into very delicate brackets, railings and at times decorative screens.

Sometimes a jali screen is made which is a perforated screen made from stones or other materials. It allows light and air to enter while reducing direct visibility.

These pictures of Jharokhas are from the City Palace of Udaipur. It is one of the best examples of how windows projecting architectural elements were integrated into a royal palace.

The palace combines Rajput traditions with influences from Mughal and European styles.

In Udaipur, Jharokhas and related balcony forms were significant because they connected the royal interiors with the city and the lake. They allowed the palaces to function not only as a residence but as i mentioned before as a place of observation.

Jharokhas are important of Rajasthan's architectural identity because they combine beauty, climate adaptation, privacy and social meaning. These Jharokhas shows the skill of traditional craftsmen and the variety of regional building traditions.

All these photos were clicked on iphone 12 during my visit to Udaipur. These windows called jharokhas made me curious because every design was different and unique in their own way. The way these were made, gave us the best light, lovey breeze in the warm afternoons.
