Our last beach visit for a snorkel after a month in the GalĆ”pagos, here on San CristĆ³bal.
It was a really fun month, and I've got a bunch of video I plan to edit together. While we were here I never got to the editing side of things. You're just living it. So now I've got a lot of great footage to sort through.
But I wanted to share this one completely unedited.
All month I was trying to get a sea lion on video underwater. Got plenty of them on the beach. A few times they swam right past me and I couldn't get my camera out fast enough. Once I caught one way off in the distance, but you could barely see it.
By the end I'd kind of stopped trying.
On this last snorkel day I was filming a huge school of fish in a cove, thousands and thousands of little fish everywhere, just swimming through the school and them dodging me.. i was pleased with catching this and then out of the fog of the thousands of fish a sea lion showed up, feeding and swirling around me. Next thing I know there were two of them. I was just trying to keep them in frame.
At one point one came right up to the camera and looked straight at me. I'll admit, I got a little scared.
The other neat part: underwater I couldn't hear a thing, just water in my ears. But the camera picked up the sea lions chirping at each other. My ears missed it. The video didn't.

My wife and I have been to the Galapagos 20 years ago and also went snorkeling. Unfortunately I didn't have a gopro back then. The playing sea lions swimming towards you and blowing bubbles at you bring back good memories. They scared me at first too.
It must have been an amazing trip!

Yeah, i was in Ecuador in 2021. At the time i decided not to got to Galapagos as it felt too expensive. I always regretted not visiting. So this was a chance to bring my family and that was the real blessing. I can only imagine how much cleaner the ocean was when you visited. I was told by locals that the water used to be much clearer. Honestly if felt really clean to me and most days there was good visibility. But peeps love to reminisce š

I sure would have liked to give them sea lions a stroke. But i hear they biteā¦so i was too afraid to be real friends. Friends that bite i tend to keep my distance. š
