[ENG/ESP] The challenge of the desalination plant and the tranquility of the landscape
Greetings! I hope you have a great, productive day full of positive energy.
I want to share a little bit about what my days have been like lately, because honestly, they’ve been pretty long and intense. Work has been demanding a lot from me, and although I sometimes end up exhausted, I also feel that wonderful sense of satisfaction knowing that I’m doing what I need to do, that I’m getting things done and making progress.
Today started very early, almost before the sun had finished stretching. We got up with the firm intention of heading to the Ecoland hotel, where—as I’ve mentioned in other posts—they’re going through a serious problem at the desalination plant. That situation has us practically running nonstop, looking for solutions, checking every detail, and trying to get the plant back to optimal operation.
The weather was pretty nice. It had rained in the early morning, leaving the air fresh, with that scent of damp earth that always fills me with calm. We first took 31 de Julio Avenue and then merged onto Simplicio Rodríguez Avenue, one of my favorites. I don’t know if this happens to you, but there are roads that you enjoy simply because of what they evoke. In my case, I love that avenue because from there you can see the sea in the distance, with that peaceful sound that relaxes the mind and body, even when you’re thinking about a thousand things related to work.

Quiero compartirles un poco de cómo han sido mis días últimamente, porque la verdad es que han estado bastante largos e intensos. El trabajo está demandando mucho de mí, y aunque a veces termino agotada, también siento esa satisfacción bonita de saber que estoy haciendo lo que debo hacer, que estoy cumpliendo y avanzando.
Este día comenzó muy temprano, casi antes de que el sol terminara de desperezarse. Nos levantamos con la intención firme de dirigirnos al hotel Ecoland, donde —como ya les he comentado en otras publicaciones— están atravesando un problema serio en la planta desalinizadora. Esa situación nos tiene prácticamente en carrera constante, buscando soluciones, revisando cada detalle y tratando de devolverle a la planta su funcionamiento óptimo.
El clima estaba bastante bueno. Había llovido en la madrugada y eso dejó el ambiente fresco, con ese olor a tierra húmeda que siempre me llena de calma. Tomamos primero la avenida 31 de Julio y luego nos incorporamos a la avenida Simplicio Rodríguez, una de mis favoritas. No sé si les pasa, pero hay caminos que uno disfruta solo por lo que evocan. En mi caso, esa avenida me encanta porque desde allí se puede ver el mar a lo lejos, con ese sonido pacífico que relaja la mente y el cuerpo, incluso cuando uno va pensando en mil cosas del trabajo.
As we took in the scenery, we arrived at the hotel. We had to wait a while before we could go inside because, even though we had agreed to arrive at 9:30 a.m., I got there at 8:15 a.m. and not all the staff had arrived yet. But this time we weren’t going alone; we brought my father along for several reasons. He was the one who, many years ago, redesigned that plant, and we wanted him to be there to see how everything has changed over time. Plus, some employees who’ve been at the hotel for many years wanted to see him and say hello. It was nice to see him reunite with people who remember him with affection and respect.
Around 9:00 a.m., we were able to enter the project area so we could all head out together to the desalination plant. This hotel always has something special, and today was no exception. As we walked toward the plant, we came across a curious crab emerging from a grate, as if it were greeting us. A few meters further on, an iguana was walking slowly, almost posing, waiting to be photographed. Being in touch with nature is something many tourists seek, and at this hotel, they find it effortlessly.
Mientras apreciábamos los paisajes, llegamos al hotel. Tuvimos que esperar un rato para poder entrar porque, aunque habíamos quedado en llegar a las 9:30 a. m., yo llegué a las 8:15 a. m. y todavía no había ingresado todo el personal. Pero esta vez no íbamos solos; llevamos a mi padre por varias razones. Él fue quien, hace muchos años, rediseñó esa planta, y queríamos que estuviera presente para ver cómo ha ido cambiando todo con el tiempo. Además, algunos empleados que llevan muchos años en el hotel querían verlo y saludarlo. Fue bonito verlo reencontrarse con personas que lo recuerdan con cariño y respeto.
Cerca de las 9:00 a. m. pudimos ingresar al área de proyectos para salir todos juntos hacia la planta desalinizadora. Este hotel siempre tiene algo especial, y hoy no fue la excepción. Mientras caminábamos hacia la planta, nos topamos con un cangrejo curioso que salía por una rejilla, como si estuviera saludándonos. Unos metros más adelante, una iguana caminaba lentamente, casi posando, esperando ser fotografiada. Estar en contacto con la naturaleza es algo que muchos turistas buscan, y en este hotel lo encuentran sin esfuerzo.
When we arrived at the plant, we began checking the connections one by one. Damage like this doesn’t happen by chance, so we had to go over everything carefully and in detail. We took samples, and the TDS levels were extremely high, which forced us to gather them and take them to the lab for further analysis.
Al llegar a la planta comenzamos a verificar las conexiones una por una. Un daño como el que presenta no ocurre por casualidad, así que había que revisar todo con paciencia y detalle. Tomamos muestras y los TDS estaban altísimos, lo que nos obligó a reunirnos y llevarlas al laboratorio para un análisis más profundo.
We then went to check on the karst bed and realized that it also needs maintenance. In short: there’s a lot of work to be done.
Luego pasamos a revisar la cama cárstica y nos dimos cuenta de que también necesita mantenimiento. En resumen: hay muchísimo trabajo por hacer.
We left the hotel because we couldn't make any further progress that day. The test results will show us which direction to take next. Tomorrow we'll return to the plant to keep working until we find a definitive solution that will allow us to get it up and running again—and not just up and running, but in optimal condition.

Nos retiramos del hotel porque, por ese día, ya no podíamos avanzar más. El resultado del análisis será el que nos indique en qué dirección debemos trabajar. Mañana volveremos a la planta para seguir hasta encontrar una solución definitiva que permita ponerla en marcha nuevamente, y no solo en marcha, sino en condiciones óptimas.
