[ENG/ESP] A Thursday of hard work where commitment comes from the heart
I wish you all a wonderful Friday, and I sincerely hope that many of you are ready to enjoy your well-deserved break—that little respite the weekend brings that always helps recharge your batteries. For us, however, it will be a rather short weekend, because we’ll be working on Saturday. Right now, we’re in the midst of replacing the filter media in Battery No. 2 at the Sunsol Ecoland Hotel’s desalination plant—a task that requires precision, physical strength, and a great deal of responsibility.
This work keeps us busy until late and leaves us exhausted, but we always have a little bit of energy and dedication left for you—to share what these workdays are like on this beautiful island, which, despite the fatigue, always inspires us to be better people. Margarita has that gift; even on the toughest days, she treats us to landscapes that soothe the spirit. People from big cities say that islanders move slowly and leisurely, but they don’t realize that everything flows just right—whereas they, in their haste, become clumsy and don’t get very far, because the island is meant to be enjoyed, whether you’re on vacation or working.
Let me tell you that this past Thursday, my husband and I left early. We had to pick up the silica filter media and the staff who usually work with us, since it’s a meticulous and physically demanding task. The weather was sweltering, just like the previous days, but bright and beautiful, with that special glow the sun has when it shines down on the island’s hills and avenues.

Para nosotros, sin embargo, será un fin de semana bastante corto, porque trabajaremos el sábado. En esta ocasión estamos inmersos en el cambio de carga de los filtros de la batería número 2 de la planta desalinizadora del hotel Sunsol Ecoland, un trabajo que exige precisión, fuerza y mucha responsabilidad.
Con esta labor estamos terminando tarde y agotados, pero siempre queda un poquito de ánimo y compromiso para ustedes, para contarles cómo transcurren estos días de trabajo en esta bella Isla que, a pesar del cansancio, siempre nos anima a ser mejores personas. Margarita tiene ese don; incluso en los días más pesados, nos regala paisajes que alivian el espíritu, las personas de grandes ciudades dicen que el Isleño es de andar lento y relajado, Pero no se dan cuenta que todo fluye debidamente, más ellos con la prisa se ponen torpes y no van muy lejos, porque la Isla es para disfrutarla estés de vacaciones o trabajando.
Les cuento que este jueves que culminó salimos temprano, mi esposo y yo. Teníamos que ir por las cargas silíceas de los filtros y por el personal que acostumbra trabajar con nosotros, ya que es una tarea meticulosa y de fuerza. El clima estaba sofocante, como en días anteriores, pero radiante y hermoso, con ese brillo particular que tiene el sol cuando cae sobre los cerros y las avenidas de la Isla.

When we arrived at the hotel, they were already waiting for us, because this job is of great importance to the desalination plant. If it fails, the hotel’s water supply fails, and in turn, the entire infrastructure is affected. I’m telling you this so you can get an idea of the level of responsibility involved in what we’re doing these days; every step must be taken with care, and every detail counts.
Al llegar al hotel ya nos estaban esperando, porque este trabajo es de gran importancia para la planta desalinizadora. Si ella falla, el agua del hotel falla, y a su vez toda la infraestructura se ve afectada. We unloaded the truck, and we all knew exactly what to do. I never carry heavy loads because they won’t let me, but I move the empty wheelbarrows, hand out tools, make sure everyone stays hydrated—which is essential—and take care of making the work conditions suitable. At the desalination plant, the heat is intense due to the island’s climate, and while the guys are working, it’s essential that they stay cool. A good fan is always a must.
Bajamos las cargas de la camioneta y todos sabíamos exactamente qué hacer. Yo nunca cargo peso porque ellos no me dejan, pero traslado las carretillas vacías, entrego herramientas, velo por la hidratación —que es fundamental— y me ocupo de adecuar las condiciones de trabajo. En la planta desalinizadora el calor es intenso por el clima de la Isla, y mientras los muchachos trabajan es indispensable que se mantengan frescos. Un buen ventilador nunca falta.
After sanding and marking the filters where they needed to be chiseled—and since that was as far as we could get at that point—we took a short walk around the area near the hotel’s lagoon. We always fall in love with that place because of its peaceful scenery and the breeze that blows through the trees. It’s a spot that invites you to take a deep breath.
Después de lijar y marcar los filtros por donde se debían picar, y como hasta ahí llegaba lo que podíamos adelantar, dimos un pequeño recorrido por el área cercana a la laguna del hotel. Ese lugar siempre nos enamora con sus paisajes tranquilos, una brisa que corre entre los árboles. Es un rincón que invita a respirar profundo.
Then we headed back because we contractors had to leave early. The hotel increased its tourist capacity in anticipation of the weekend—something very common at this time of year. So tomorrow we’ll have plenty of time to buy more supplies for another job that’s also on the schedule.
It was a day of hard work and dedication, but there was always time to relax and take in some of the scenery that reminds us why we love this island.

Luego nos retiramos porque los contratistas debíamos salir temprano. El hotel aumentó su capacidad de turistas por la llegada del fin de semana, algo muy común en esta época. Así que mañana tendremos tiempo suficiente para comprar otros materiales para otro trabajo que también está en agenda.
