Sunday is one of my favorite days of the week, because at home we usually slow down, relax, and treat ourselves to those little pleasures that sometimes get lost amid our weekday responsibilities. We prepare traditional dishes from my homeland—the kind that smell of home and memories—and spend time together without rushing, without watches, simply letting ourselves be carried away by the tranquility of the day. That’s why today I also wish you a happy and restful Sunday, a day that allows you to recharge your batteries so you can start the week with renewed energy and a lighter mind.
But before diving into this long-awaited Sunday, I want to tell you about our Saturday, which was full of surprises, laughter, shared chores, and those kinds of moments that, even though they sometimes throw our plans off track, end up leaving a warm feeling in our hearts.
To be honest, I was planning to sleep in a little longer this Saturday. I was looking forward to stretching out the morning, to staying under the covers a little longer, but at 7:15 a.m. I heard a familiar car horn honking insistently at my door. It was my father. It had occurred to him, in the middle of the night and taking advantage of his insomnia, to sand down a part of his refrigerator because, as he said, “it looked ugly” and he wanted us to come to his house to paint it. My father, at 84, still comes up with ideas that surprise us. And although he sometimes throws us off balance, we know that supporting him is important so he feels useful, active, and accompanied. That means a lot to him.
So we got up, put aside the idea of a long rest, and made breakfast for everyone, including the one who left his house without eating a bite.

When I asked him over breakfast what kind of paint he planned to use on the fridge, he replied, jokingly, “Whatever you buy me—I don’t have any… just paint thinner.” At that moment, I knew the day was going to be a good one.
We put on appropriate clothes, loaded the spray gun and compressor into the car, and set off. My husband drove our car, and I went with my father to find a place to buy white oil-based paint. We stopped first at the Terranova shopping center, but it was closed, so we turned around and went to the paint store in La Asunción. There we found the paint—not exactly what I wanted, but they assured us it was good. We also bought some fine sandpaper to smooth out the work he had done by hand.

My dad was excited, almost like a kid with a new toy. And although I have to admit that doing things this way, without any planning, makes me a little uncomfortable, I tried to go with the flow so he could enjoy his idea. We got to his house, and I started sanding down the entire fridge, which was definitely in need of it.

Meanwhile, my husband was setting up the spray gun and the air compressor. When I was done, he started painting.

While my husband was working, my father and I went out to the yard to feed the chickens and his flock of turkeys, his greatest pride and joy. Seven turkeys hatched from seven eggs, and they’re already big and healthy. He looks at them with a mix of tenderness and satisfaction.

When we were done, we explained to him that we’d worked hard all week and needed to rest. He understood. Even though he’s independent, we know that sometimes he needs our help—and, above all, our patience.
We said goodbye and went home to get some rest. It was a busy morning, sure, but seeing how happy my dad was when he saw his fridge painted made it all worth it.
I hope you have a wonderful Sunday. I’ll tell you a little bit about my day-to-day life in future posts.
See you soon.
Bye.
Chao.

You bet it was a busy morning, but in a good way. In the end, what matters is that we got to spend some quality time with my dad, which is always a pleasure, to be honest.
