Hello, I wish you all a happy Palm Sunday.
I sincerely hope you’re spending it with your families and those loved ones who always brighten up any special day. For me, that’s the true warmth of Sundays: togetherness, shared laughter, well-deserved rest, and that feeling of home that you only get when you’re surrounded by love. As for me, we’ll be at home today, taking it easy, though we haven’t ruled out a little getaway to a nearby beach this afternoon… if the vacationers leave us a little spot, of course.
The island is packed with tourists. You can feel it from early on—that constant coming and going, that fast-paced rhythm they bring from their bustling cities, which sometimes clashes with the natural calm of this place. Many find it hard to adjust to the leisurely pace we usually keep here, but even so, it’s lovely to see how they enjoy themselves, how they marvel at what is everyday life for us.
I want to tell you about my day yesterday, because I made the most of it and felt like I wrapped up several pending tasks at home. We got up around 8:30, without rushing, but with the clear intention of getting our little ones organized. This week, new chicks and quails were born, so we were all on the edge of our seats with excitement. After breakfast, we got to work; we had to disinfect some areas, reorganize others, and make sure everything was in order for the new members of our feathered family.

De corazón espero que lo estén pasando en compañía de sus familias y de esos seres queridos que siempre llenan de luz cualquier día especial. Ese es, para mí, el verdadero calor de los domingos; la unión, la risa compartida, el descanso merecido y esa sensación de hogar que solo se siente cuando uno está rodeado de afecto. Por mi parte, hoy estaremos en casa, tranquilos, aunque no descartamos darnos en la tarde una escapadita a alguna playa cercana… si los temporadistas nos dejan un rinconcito libre, claro está.
La Isla está repleta de turistas. Se nota desde temprano ese ir y venir constante, ese ritmo acelerado que traen desde sus ciudades convulsas y que a veces choca con la calma natural de este lugar. A muchos les cuesta acoplarse al paso pausado que aquí solemos llevar, pero aun así es bonito ver cómo disfrutan, cómo se maravillan con lo que para nosotros es cotidiano.
Quiero contarles cómo fue mi día de ayer, porque lo aproveché al máximo y sentí que cerré varias cosas pendientes en casa. Nos levantamos cerca de las ocho y media, sin apuros, pero con la intención clara de organizar nuestras crías. Esta semana nacieron nuevos pollitos y codornices, así que la emoción estaba a flor de piel. Después de desayunar, nos pusimos manos a la obra; había que desinfectar algunos espacios, reorganizar otros y asegurarnos de que todo quedara en orden para los nuevos integrantes de la familia alada.
Our flock consists mainly of laying hens, with a few turkeys and a handful of Brahma hens.
Nuestra cría es mayormente ponedora, con algunos gallipavos y unas cuantas ponedoras de raza brahma.
All told, we now have about forty-five chickens, which provide us with eggs and meat. We started this before the pandemic, when my allergies meant I couldn’t eat many things and we needed safer, more natural alternatives. It all began with a pair of chickens my father gave us, and look at us now—we’re almost 100% self-sufficient.

We owe much of this success to my husband’s ingenuity; he built an incubator using an old microwave. That creativity has been key to expanding our flock without requiring major investments. Some days we collect half a carton of eggs, and we usually trade them with neighbors for vegetables or simply give them away. We don’t want to commit to selling them because our work also takes up a lot of our time, and although we work as a team at home, we prefer to keep this as a way to supplement our food supply rather than as a business. As long as it provides enough for us to eat, we’re more than grateful.
Gran parte de ese logro se lo debemos al ingenio de mi esposo, que construyó una incubadora usando un microondas viejo. Esa creatividad ha sido clave para que la cría aumente sin necesidad de grandes inversiones. Hay días en los que recogemos medio cartón de huevos, y solemos intercambiarlos con los vecinos por verduras o simplemente regalarlos. No queremos comprometernos con ventas porque nuestro trabajo también nos ocupa bastante tiempo, y aunque en casa funcionamos como un equipo, preferimos mantener esto como un apoyo para nuestra alimentación y no como un negocio. Con que nos dé para comer, estamos más que agradecidos.
We spent most of the morning moving things around, cleaning, adjusting, and checking things over. In the end, we managed to make everything as comfortable as possible for our birds. In the afternoon, we hopped on the motorcycle to buy a few things for the week, because more tourists are arriving every day and things are getting more complicated.
Pasamos buena parte de la mañana moviendo cosas de un lado a otro, limpiando, ajustando, revisando. Al final, logramos dejar todo lo más cómodo posible para nuestras aves. Ya en la tarde salimos en la moto a comprar algunas cosas para la semana, porque cada día llegan más turistas y todo se vuelve más complicado.
As I walked past the famous arepa restaurant “Hermanos Moya,” it was, as expected, packed with customers. For many people, visiting the island without eating there is almost like not having been there at all. And although arepas aren’t my favorite dish, I have to admit that the ones there are extraordinary. It’s no wonder it’s always so crowded.
Al pasar por la famosa arepera “Hermanos Moya”, estaba, como era de esperarse, repleta de visitantes. Para muchos, venir a la Isla y no comer allí es casi como no haber venido. Y aunque las arepas no son mi plato favorito, debo reconocer que las de ese lugar son extraordinarias. No por gusto se llena tanto.
We went to several places until we managed to buy everything we needed to get through the week without any worries. With so much traffic on the streets, it was best to head home. We returned happy, satisfied that we had accomplished what we set out to do that day.
