[ENG/ESP] A Different Kind of Vacation: Work, the Open Road, and the Island's Beauty

This week got off to a very busy start for us, and before I tell you all the details, I want to wish you a wonderful day, full of serenity and, above all, productivity. Sometimes, simply starting the week with positive energy makes all the difference in how everything else unfolds. This Monday was a holiday in Venezuela, as we celebrated Indigenous Resistance Day. Many took the opportunity to rest, spend time with family, or simply stay home, but others—like us, who work for the hotel chain—experience these days as periods of hard work, where responsibility knows no holidays.
We left home early, as always, in the hot weather that characterizes the island, though that day it was particularly unpredictable. The sky was a deep, almost brilliant blue, dotted with a few scattered clouds that at times gave the illusion that it might rain. It was just that—an illusion fueled by the hope that the heat would let up a little, because when the sun decides to shine here, it does so with full force. That’s how many days on the island are: beautiful, bright, but demanding—which is why staying hydrated is a rule that should never be forgotten.

Esta semana comenzó muy activa para nosotros, y antes de contarles cada detalle quiero desearles un día maravilloso, lleno de serenidad y, sobre todo, de productividad. A veces el simple hecho de comenzar la semana con buena energía marca la diferencia en cómo se desarrolla todo lo demás. Este lunes fue feriado en Venezuela, pues se conmemoraba el Día de la Resistencia Indígena. Muchos aprovecharon para descansar, compartir en familia o simplemente quedarse en casa, pero otros, como nosotros que trabajamos para la cadena hotelera, vivimos estos días como jornadas de arduo trabajo, donde la responsabilidad no entiende de feriados.
Salimos temprano de casa, como siempre, con ese clima caluroso que caracteriza a la Isla, pero que ese día estaba particularmente caprichoso. El cielo tenía un tono azul intenso, casi brillante, acompañado de algunas nubes dispersas que por momentos daban la ilusión de que llovería. Era solo eso, una ilusión alimentada por el deseo de que el calor cediera un poco, porque cuando el sol decide imponerse acá, lo hace con fuerza. Así son muchos días en la Isla; hermosos, luminosos, pero exigentes, y por eso la hidratación es una regla que nunca se debe olvidar.

The first thing we had to do was fill up on gas. On Saturday, I worked late into the night and couldn’t do it, and on Sunday I decided to rest so I could start the week with renewed energy. We took Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi Avenue toward the Los Cerritos gas station, one of our favorites because of how well-organized and efficient it is. This time we didn’t spend much time there because they changed the payment system, and now everything flows incredibly smoothly—almost no lines, almost no stress. With a full tank, we began our routine work route.

Lo primero que debíamos hacer era colocar combustible. El sábado trabajé hasta altas horas de la noche y no pude hacerlo, y el domingo preferí descansar para comenzar la semana con energía renovada. Tomamos la avenida Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi rumbo a la bomba de Los Cerritos, una de nuestras preferidas por su organización y rapidez. Esta vez no nos demoramos mucho porque cambiaron el sistema de pago y ahora todo fluye de una manera impresionante, casi sin filas, casi sin estrés. Con el tanque full, comenzamos nuestro recorrido rutinario de trabajo.

Our first stop was the Unik Hotel, where we were supposed to submit the invoices for the work completed and verify the system’s parameters. Even though it was a holiday, the maintenance manager was there to receive the invoices and ensure that the accountant could continue her work the next day. That sense of responsibility and dedication is always appreciated, because it helps everything run smoothly without delays.

Nuestra primera parada fue el hotel Unik, donde debíamos entregar las facturas del trabajo realizado y verificar los parámetros del sistema. A pesar de ser feriado, el gerente de mantenimiento estaba allí para recibir las facturas y asegurarse de que la contadora pudiera avanzar con su trabajo al día siguiente. Esa responsabilidad y constancia siempre se agradecen, porque facilitan que todo funcione sin retrasos.

With that second task of the day completed, we headed to the Parque Costa Azul shopping center to perform our service. We took the readings, verified that everything was within the proper ranges, and, after properly documenting everything, we wrapped up the job. It was already quite late and we hadn’t eaten anything, so we decided to stop by the McDonald’s that was on our way. We ordered at the drive-thru and ate as we drove home, enjoying that little moment of rest that feels so good after a busy morning.

Con esa segunda tarea del día cumplida, nos dirigimos al centro comercial Parque Costa Azul para realizar nuestro servicio. Medimos los valores, verificamos que todo estuviera dentro de los rangos adecuados y, al dar debidamente, dimos por terminado el trabajo. Ya era bastante tarde y no habíamos comido nada, así que decidimos pasar por el McDonald’s que nos quedaba de camino. Pedimos en el autoservicio y fuimos comiendo mientras avanzábamos hacia casa, disfrutando ese pequeño momento de descanso que se siente tan bien después de una mañana movida.

The sunset views were beautiful, with that sky blending shades of gold, pink, and blue—a sight that always inspires me to take a photo or simply gaze at it in silence. The island has that gift; even on the most intense days, it always offers a moment of beauty that is comforting.

Los paisajes del atardecer eran hermosos, con ese cielo que mezcla tonos dorados, rosados y azules, y que siempre me inspira a tomar una foto o simplemente a contemplarlo en silencio. La Isla tiene ese don; incluso en los días más intensos, siempre regala un instante de belleza que reconforta.
