My week started as usual—very busy—with that pace that’s now part of my daily routine and that, although it can be quite demanding at times, also keeps me focused and grateful for every day I get to live and make the most of. Today I had to head to the Sunsol Unik Hotel and SENIAT to pay my taxes, so I knew early on that it would be a busy day—one of those that starts with administrative tasks and ends with technical fieldwork.
I got up before the sun was fully up, because to pay taxes you have to wait in line, and the earlier you arrive, the earlier you leave. That’s an unwritten rule we all know—one that can sometimes seem tedious, but when followed, really makes life easier. Plus, the weather was wonderful: a gentle breeze, a clear sky, and that warm light that usually accompanies mornings on the island. I took advantage of the drive into town to capture some beautiful landscapes; I always make a habit of observing, of mentally pausing to take in the details, and when I can, I take photos that later remind me how lucky I am to live surrounded by so much natural beauty—it’s something that brightens our days.

Mi semana comenzó como de costumbre, muy activa, con ese ritmo que ya forma parte de mi día a día y que, aunque a veces exige bastante, también me mantiene enfocada y agradecida por cada jornada que puedo vivir y aprovechar. Hoy debía dirigir mis pasos al hotel Sunsol Unik y al SENIAT para pagar mis impuestos, así que desde temprano ya tenía claro que sería un día movido, de esos que comienzan con diligencias administrativas y terminan con trabajo técnico en campo.
Me levanté antes de que el sol estuviera completamente alto, porque para pagar los impuestos hay que hacer cola y mientras más temprano se llegue, más temprano se sale. Esa es una regla no escrita que todos conocemos, y que a veces puede parecer tediosa, pero cuando se cumple, realmente facilita la vida. Además, el clima estaba estupendo; una brisa suave, un cielo despejado y esa luz cálida que suele acompañar las mañanas en la isla. Aproveché el recorrido hacia la ciudad para capturar algunos paisajes hermosos; siempre llevo conmigo la costumbre de observar, de detenerme mentalmente en los detalles, y cuando puedo, tomo fotografías que luego me recuerdan lo afortunada que soy de vivir rodeada de tanta belleza natural, es algo que alegra nuestros días.
I arrived in the city very early so I could pay my taxes, and to my surprise, there were only three people ahead of me. Everything went quite quickly, without any hitches—no long waits that can sometimes be so frustrating. In less time than I had imagined, I was already leaving the SENIAT with the satisfaction of having fulfilled that responsibility, which, although not always pleasant, is part of an organized life and formal employment.
Llegué bien temprano a la ciudad para poder pagar los impuestos y, para mi sorpresa, solo tenía tres personas por delante. Todo fluyó bastante rápido, sin contratiempos, sin esas largas esperas que a veces desesperan. En menos tiempo del que imaginaba ya estaba saliendo del SENIAT con la satisfacción de haber cumplido con esa responsabilidad que, aunque no siempre es agradable, es parte de la vida organizada y del trabajo formal.
When I was done, I headed to the Sunsol Unik Hotel to backwash the trench filters, which were a bit clogged after working nonstop all weekend. When we arrived, we were greeted by the maintenance manager, who welcomed us with his usual warmth and immediately assigned us to another employee because he had to attend the hotel’s weekly staff meeting. This routine is now standard: everyone fulfills their role, and everything runs like a well-oiled machine.
Al terminar, salí rumbo al hotel Sunsol Unik para hacer el retrolavado de los filtros de trinchera, que estaban un poco saturados después de trabajar sin descanso durante todo el fin de semana. Al llegar, fuimos recibidos por el gerente de mantenimiento, quien nos saludó con la cordialidad de siempre y enseguida nos asignó a otro empleado porque debía entrar al despacho semanal del hotel. Esa dinámica ya es habitual: cada quien cumple su rol y todo se mueve como una maquinaria bien coordinada.
We went into the trench where the filters are located, and my husband began backwashing the filters. At first, the water came out a little cloudy, full of accumulated solids—which is completely normal after so many days of continuous operation.
Entramos a la trinchera donde se encuentran los filtros y mi esposo comenzó a realizar el retrolavado de los filtros. Al principio el agua salía un poco oscura, cargada de sólidos acumulados, algo completamente normal después de tantos días de operación continua.
Little by little, it cleared up until it was finally crystal clear—a sign that the process had been successful. We performed the necessary checks and, after verifying that the water was within normal parameters, we considered our work at the hotel complete.
Poco a poco fue aclarando, hasta que finalmente salió cristalina, señal de que el proceso había sido exitoso. Realizamos las comprobaciones requeridas y, al verificar que el agua estaba dentro de los parámetros normales, dimos por culminado nuestro trabajo en el hotel.
We left with the satisfaction of having accomplished everything we’d planned for the day—that peaceful feeling you get when you know you did what you were supposed to do and did it well. I’ll say goodbye to you all once again—but not for long, since tomorrow I’ll be back to writing another little snippet of my daily life on this beautiful island that I love so much.
