Daily Blog - Our Arabic dinner in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil: a little taste of a foreign culture while abroad. / La cena árabe que tuvimos en Foz de Iguazú, Brasil: un poco de cultura extranjera en el extranjero. 😃❤️

Since I started traveling, I’ve only visited a neighboring country a few times, but whenever I do, I love getting to feel like a tourist. Besides exploring the beautiful landscapes I came to see, I also love seeing what everyday life is like in the places we visit. In the case of our trip to Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, everything felt quite different, even though we were so close to home. My dad and I had some great days while we were there on our way to visit the waterfalls, and of course, we also visited different places to grab something to eat 😃.

Desde que empecé a viajar hasta ahora, pocas veces estuve en un país vecino, pero cuando lo estuve, me encanta sentirme como turista. Además de recorrer los paisajes hermosos que fui a ver, también me encanta ver cómo son las cosas cotidianas del lugar que visitamos. En el caso de nuestra visita a Foz de Iguazú, en Brazil, todo se sentía bastante diferente, a pesar de que estuviéramos tan cerca de casa. Mi papá y yo tuvimos unos días geniales mientras estábamos de paso para visitar las Cataratas, y por supuesto que también visitamos distintos lugares para comer algo 😃.

Up until then, we had been getting by eating one of the dishes that was sold everywhere, which included some kind of meat, rice, salad, potatoes, and feijoada. Aside from the beans, this meal reminded me quite a bit of what I had eaten in Bolivia. The great thing about this dish was the price, since for around $5 you could get a complete meal. I think this was the trip where I ate the best, since I barely ate as much cold cuts as I usually do (especially now that I work at a cold cuts factory, so I tried to avoid them at least during my vacation).

Hasta el momento, habíamos subsistido comiendo uno de los platos que vendían en todas partes, los que incluían algo de carne, arroz, ensalada, papas y feijoada. Esta comida, a excepción de los porotos, me hacía acordar bastante a lo que comí en Bolivia. Lo bueno de este plato era su valor, ya que por unos $5 podías tener una comida completa. Creo que este fue el viaje en el que mejor comí, ya que prácticamente no comí tanto fiambre como siempre (además de que ahora mi trabajo es una fábrica de fiambres, así que intenté evitarlo al menos durante mis vacaciones).

Something that made our stay much easier was the fact that we had chosen a hotel in the city center. I was a little unsure about where to find convenient accommodation, so staying on a main street and close to the bus terminal turned out to be a good idea. This also allowed us to be just steps away from the shops and businesses, which, even on weekdays, stayed open until midnight. Of course, we couldn’t be in Brazil without going to a bar to try the famous caipirinha, and although my dad doesn’t drink alcohol, he at least joined me in trying a little (and he liked it).

Algo que facilitó mucho nuestra estadía fue el hecho de habernos alojado en un hotel en el centro de la ciudad. Tenía un poco de dudas sobre dónde conseguir un alojamiento conveniente, así que quedarnos sobre una calle principal y cerca de la terminal de buses fue una buena idea. Esto también nos permitió estar a pasos de los locales comerciales, que aún en días de semana, cerraban a la medianoche. Por supuesto que no podíamos estar en Brasil si no íbamos a algún bar a probar la famosa Caipirinha, y aunque mi papá no toma alcohol, al menos se unió a probarlo un poco (y le gustó).

One very curious thing we noticed, at least in the area around our hotel, was the large number of Arabic food places. I think that on just one block, counting both sides of the street, there must have been at least five places like that. I don’t know if Brazilians are particularly fond of this type of food or if there was simply a migration boom in the area, but these places were everywhere, even in the large shopping malls. Of course, more than one of our dinners was shawarma, the typical wrap filled with pieces of meat, vegetables, and sauces. It was really cheap, costing less than $5, so it was also a good option for getting something in our stomachs.

Algo muy curioso que vimos, al menos en la zona circundante a nuestro hotel, era la gran cantidad de locales de comida árabe. Creo que en una cuadra sola, contando ambas veredas, habrían al menos cinco locales de este tipo. No sé si a los brasileros les gusta mucho este tipo de comidas o simplemente hubo un boom migratorio aquí, pero estos locales abundaban, incluso en los grandes shoppings. Obvio que más de una de nuestras cenas fue un Shawarma, el típico arrollado de carne en trozos con verduras y salsas: realmente costaba muy barato, menos de $5, así que también era una buena opción para tener algo en el estómago.

Traveling with my dad is always very easy because he’s so flexible and adapts to any plan. We were both happy with our decision to stay in Foz, where we had the chance to experience a little bit of Brazil and, indirectly, a little bit of Arabia. This trip was my first week off since I started working, which also made it very special. Everything went well for us, and that was something worth toasting to, so at the end of the night, we had one more glass of caipirinha. This drink doesn’t take long to put you in a good mood, which finally helped me understand the good spirits of our neighbors in Brazil 😂.

Viajar con mi papá siempre es muy sencillo, ya que él es tan flexible que se adapta a cualquier plan. Los dos estábamos contentos por haber elegido nuestra estadía en Foz, en donde tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer un poco de Brasil e, indirectamente, un poco de Arabia. Este viaje fue mi primera semana de descanso desde que estoy trabajando, así que eso también lo volvió muy especial. Todo salió bien para nosotros, y había que brindar, así que al final de la noche, probamos un vaso más de caipirinha. Esta bebida no tarda en ponerte alegre, lo que finalmente me hizo entender el buen humor de nuestros vecinos de Brasil 😂.
