City life can be very peaceful and routine, but it only takes a little search for adventure to find it. Several months had passed since I returned home and settled into working life, so I was already craving a bit of excitement in my days, even if only for a little while. While browsing Facebook, I decided to look for groups that organized weekend hiking trips, and luckily, I found quite a few people who do exactly that. It wouldn't be the first time I had joined an activity with complete strangers, so I decided to give it a try, and I had an amazing time 😃.

La vida en la ciudad puede ser muy tranquila y rutinaria, pero solo basta con buscar un poco de aventura para encontrarla. Habían pasado varios meses de mi vuelta a casa y asentamiento en la vida laboral, por lo que ya necesitaba un poco de emoción en mis días, aunque sea por un momento. Navegando en Facebook, se me ocurrió buscar grupos que hicieran algo de trekking de fin de semana, y por suerte, encontré a un buen puñado de personas que organizan justo estas actividades. No sería la primera vez que hago algo con desconocidos, así que me animé a ir y la pasé increíble 😃.

The person who organizes these trips is an experienced mountaineer who, although not a certified guide, has a great adventurous spirit. He organizes outings both near and far from the urban center of the City of Buenos Aires, so to get a first impression and get to know him, I joined a one-day trip to Pereyra Park, about 45 km south of the city. That outing was excellent, and I had a great time walking along the trails through a vast forest. After that experience, I didn't hesitate to join a more distant trip when he proposed one during one of our three-day weekends in December last year. The destination was Balcarce, in the interior of Buenos Aires Province, 385 km from my home.

El que organiza este tipo de paseos es un montañista experimentado, que aunque no es guía, tiene una buena actitud aventurera. Él propone salidas cerca y lejos del casco urbano de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, así que para tener una primera impresión y conocerlo, me uní a una salida de un día en el Parque Pereyra, a unos 45 km al sur de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Esta salida estuvo excelente y la pasé muy bien caminando entre los senderos de un gran bosque, así que no dudé en unirme a una salida más lejana cuando la propuso en uno de nuestros fines de semana de tres días en Diciembre del año pasado. Se trataba de un paseo hasta Balcarce en el interior de la provincia de Buenos Aires, a 385 km de mi casa.

This trip immediately caught my attention because I had never been to this place before. In fact, I haven't explored much of the interior of Buenos Aires Province, mainly because it's so vast. I was also surprised to discover that there was some elevation in my province, considering that it's mostly flat. Buenos Aires is home to only two major mountain systems, located around the cities of Tandil and Sierra de la Ventana, but there are also several smaller hills scattered throughout the province, as is the case in the city of Balcarce.

Esta propuesta me interesó enseguida porque no conocía este lugar. En realidad, no conozco mucho el interior de Buenos Aires ya que este es enorme. También estaba sorprendida de encontrar un poco de elevación en mi provincia, ya que esta es mayormente plana. En Buenos Aires solo hay dos sistemas montañosos grandes albergados en las ciudades de Tandil y Sierra de la Ventana, pero también existen unos cuantos pequeños cerros desparramados por ahí, como en el caso de la ciudad de Balcarce.

To get there, Guille, the organizer, arranged us into different cars so we could travel together. The system we used was one driver and three passengers, with the passengers splitting the cost of the fuel. In my case, I was assigned to a driver who picked me up at my house at 5:00 AM, and by just before 10:00 AM we had already reached the meeting point with the rest of the group. Out of everyone who joined the trip, I only knew Guille from our previous outing to the park, but it didn't take long for me to start socializing with the rest of the people there. The plan was to spend two nights in some cabins with a swimming pool and do a bit of hiking around the area.

Para poder llegar hasta allá, Guille, el organizador, nos acomodó en distintos autos para poder viajar juntos. El sistema que usamos fue de un conductor más tres pasajeros, quienes nos repartiríamos el costo de la nafta. En mi caso, me tocó un conductor que me pasó a buscar por mi casa a las 5 AM, y para antes de las 10 AM ya estábamos en el punto de encuentro con los demás integrantes del grupo. De todas las personas que fueron, solo conocía a Guille por la salida en el parque, pero no tardé en hacer sociales con el resto de la gente que estaba ahí. La idea era pasar dos noches en unas cabañas con pileta y caminar un poco en los alrededores.

The place chosen by the organizer was beautiful, and since we were already so close to summer, we even got to enjoy the swimming pool. I was really excited about this trip because it had been quite a while since I had gone hiking, so it felt like the perfect opportunity to relive my days as a traveler. The rest of the group arrived around noon, and we all had lunch together, marking the beginning of our weekend surrounded by nature. One thing worth mentioning about this group was that most of the participants were over 45 years old, so I was the youngest of everyone. That didn't matter, though, because everyone had the same energetic spirit and enthusiasm for hiking in the mountains.

El lugar elegido por el guía era hermoso, y como ya estábamos muy cerca del verano, hasta pudimos aprovechar la pileta. Yo estaba muy emocionada por este paseo porque hacía bastante que no hacía algo de trekking, así que sería ideal para recordar mis días de viajera. El resto del grupo llegó alrededor del mediodía y almorzamos todos juntos, dando inicio a lo que sería nuestro fin de semana en la naturaleza. Algo para destacar de este grupo era que la mayoría de la gente era +45, así que yo era la más joven de todos, pero eso no importa ya que el espíritu de todos era enérgico como para caminar en las montañas.

This trip cost me 140,000 ARS (about $100), which included two nights of accommodation, all meals, and even snacks for the hikes. On top of that, I paid around 60,000 ARS (about $45) to cover my share of the fuel costs for the drivers. I didn't find the price expensive at all, considering everything we did and how much we hiked. We left early on Saturday morning and I got back home on Monday night, giving us more than enough time to spend plenty of hours on the trails. I absolutely loved this trip and our accommodation—I definitely made the right choice by joining those strangers for the weekend 😃.

Este viaje me costó 140000 ARS (unos $100) por dos noches de alojamiento y todas las comidas incluidas, además de snacks para caminar durante el trekking. Además, tuve que pagar unos 60000 ARS ($45) por el costo de la nafta a los conductores. Este precio no me pareció para nada costoso, considerando todo lo que hicimos y caminamos. Salimos un sábado a la madrugada y regresé a casa el lunes por la noche, tiempo más que suficiente para caminar bastante. Me encantó esta salida y nuestro alojamiento: hice una buena elección yendo a pasear con esos desconocidos 😃.
