Daily Blog - I dared to stay at the cheap hotel with a 3-out-of-5-star rating… and survived the experience. / Me atreví a ir al hotel barato con 3 de 5 estrellas de reseña... y sobreviví en el intento. 😅❤️

I think that when it comes to traveling, there are different types of travelers who find value in different things. Some may value being in a beautiful place, enjoying a great dinner at a nice restaurant, taking the best photos for the internet, or staying in luxurious, high-end hotels. Of course, all of that requires a budget that can support it—but my dear friends, you know that having a generous budget is not exactly my strongest suit. On my side, what I value most is being in the place I want to explore, with the place where I sleep falling almost at the very bottom of my budget priorities. And that mindset has taken me to places of all kinds and categories 😅.

Creo que a la hora de pasear existen distintos tipos de viajeros que encuentran valor en diferentes cosas. Habrá quienes valoren estar en un lugar hermoso, tener una buena cena en un gran restaurante, sacarse las mejores fotos para internet o tener estadías de lujo en hoteles importantes. Por supuesto que todo eso conlleva un presupuesto que lo aguante, pero queridos amigos míos, ustedes saben que un presupuesto holgado no es el mayor de mis fuertes. De este lado, lo que yo más aprecio es estar en el lugar que quiero conocer, quedando casi al fondo del presupuesto el lugar en el que voy a dormir. Y eso me ha llevado a lugares de todas las categorías 😅.

I consider one of my greatest strengths to be my ability to easily adapt to whatever situations come my way. This applies both to my everyday life and when I’m traveling. When my stay in the province of Formosa was planned, I once again ran into the issue that there were no hostels to stay in. This forced me to look for a hotel once more, but one that would, of course, fit my backpacker budget. Luckily, I was able to find one—suspiciously cheap and very close to the city center.

Yo considero que una de mis grandes virtudes es que puedo adaptarme fácilmente a las situaciones que se me presenten. Esto en mi vida general y también al momento de estar de paseo. Cuando estaba planeado mi paso por la provincia de Formosa, otra vez me encontré con el problema de que no había hostel para quedarse. Esto me obligó a buscar un hotel una vez más, pero que por supuesto se ajustara a mi presupuesto mochilero. Por suerte pude encontrar uno, sospechosamente barato y muy cerca del centro de la ciudad.

When I started reading the reviews and saw that it didn’t even reach 4 out of 5 stars, I understood the reason behind the price. Many people were complaining about noise, lack of cleanliness, a poor breakfast, and even cockroaches. A normal person wouldn’t have gone anywhere near that place—but do you know what I did? I booked it anyway to live my own experience (besides, I couldn’t find any other place that, for just $20 per night, offered such a central location and a private room).

Cuando me puse a leer reseñas y vi que ni siquiera superaba las 4 estrellas de 5, entendí el por qué del precio. Mucha gente quejándose de los ruidos, de la falta de higiene, del desayuno pobre, y hasta de las cucarachas. Una persona normal ni siquiera se hubiese acercado a ese lugar, ¿pero saben lo que hice? Reservé de todos modos para ir a vivir mi propia experiencia (además, no conseguí otro lugar que por apenas $20 por noche me ofreciera una ubicación tan céntrica y en habitación privada).

When I finally arrived at the hotel, I have to say the vibe felt a bit strange. The overall lighting wasn’t very good, and there was a mix of dampness and cleaning products in the air. I hesitated a bit about whether I had made a good choice, but I was already there, so I had to make it work. The room I got looked fairly decent and even had a desk where I could work comfortably—that was what I liked the most. However, the same damp-and-perfume smell was present in the room, so I had to air everything out before I could breathe easily 😂.

Cuando finalmente llegué al hotel, debo decir que la vibra me pareció un poco rara. La iluminación en general no era muy buena, y había una mezcla de humedad con productos de limpieza. Un poco dudé de si había hecho una buena elección, pero ya estaba ahí así que tenía que hacer que funcione. La habitación que me tocó se veía bastante decente y hasta tenía un escritorio en donde podría trabajar cómodamente, eso fue lo que más me gustó. Sin embargo, el mismo olor de humedad y perfume estaba en la habitación, así que tuve que ventilar todo antes de poder respirar tranquila 😂.

Another good thing was that the hotel rate included breakfast. It seemed like a basic breakfast of coffee with milk or other hot drinks, along with toast or croissants, but still—better than nothing. Something that made me laugh was that in the dining room there was a painting of a very colorful marijuana leaf, completely out of place with the sober atmosphere of the hotel. I wondered whether the owners actually knew it was a cannabis leaf, or if they just thought it was a cheerful painting and happily hung it in their establishment 😅.

Otra de las cosas buenas era que la tarifa de este hotel incluía desayuno. Me pareció un desayuno básico de café con leche o infusiones con tostadas o medialunas, pero siempre nada es peor. Algo que me causó gracia es que en el comedor había un cuadro con una hoja de marihuana muy colorida, desentonando totalmente con el ambiente sobrio de este lugar. Me pregunté si los dueños realmente saben que se trata de una chala o habrán pensado que solo es un cuadro alegre y lo colgaron felizmente en su establecimiento 😅.

In total, I spent three nights in this place while exploring the surroundings of Formosa. The truth is that the location was very good—just three blocks from the main avenue. From there, I could walk to the riverfront or take an Uber Moto to go a bit farther. I don’t have many expectations when it comes to accommodation (that’s why I spent more than a year living in hostels and sharing everything with everyone), so my experience wasn’t that unpleasant. Unfortunately, I have to say that all the comments about this place were true—even the ones about cockroaches, because I did see one, but luckily it was on my last morning before leaving 😅.

En total, pasé tres noches en este lugar recorriendo los alrededores de Formosa. La verdad era que la ubicación era muy buena, a solo 3 cuadras de la avenida principal. Desde ahí pude ir caminando hasta la costanera, o tomar un Uber Moto para viajar un poco más allá. Yo no tengo muchas pretensiones en cuanto a los alojamientos (por eso me pasé más de un año viviendo en hosteles y compartiendo todo con todos), así que mi experiencia no fue tan desagradable. Lamentablemente, debo decir que todos los comentarios sobre este lugar eran cierto, incluso lo de las cucarachas porque vi una, pero por suerte fue la última mañana cuando me fui 😅.

From this whole experience, the most important thing I take away is that I got to know the city of Formosa, which was my main goal. During my stay at this hotel, I was able to rest well and work with decent internet, so I can’t complain too much either. At that moment, my budget was enough for that place, and I was glad it worked for what I was looking for. I suppose that now that I have a formal job and manage different numbers thanks to my (still humble) engineer’s salary, I’ll allow myself to sleep in better places—or maybe not, because I think my simple essence and my tendency to look for cheap accommodation will stay with me forever 😂.

De toda esta experiencia, destaco lo más importante que fue el hecho de haber conocido la ciudad de Formosa que era lo que quería. Durante mi estadía en este hotel pude descansar bien y trabajar con un internet decente, así que tampoco me voy a quejar tanto. En ese momento, mi presupuesto alcanzaba para ese lugar y me alegré de que haya sido funcional a lo que yo estaba buscando. Supongo que ahora que tengo un trabajo formal y manejo otros números gracias a mi (igualmente humilde) sueldo de ingeniera, me permitiré dormir en lugares mejores (o no, creo que mi esencia sencilla y buscadora de alojamientos baratos me acompañará por siempre) 😂.
