Even though my arrival in Paraguay had been slightly delayed due to the canceled bus, I still had some time to explore the surroundings. I decided to cross the border from Formosa in Argentina to the capital, Asunción, because that’s where Noe was—a friend I had met while volunteering a few months earlier. Just like back then, she was volunteering at a new hostel, and I would be staying as a guest, but that wouldn’t stop us from exploring together like we had already done in Salta 😃.

A pesar de que mi llegada a Paraguay se había retrasado un poco debido al micro cancelado, todavía había llegado con un poco de tiempo para explorar los alrededores. Decidí cruzar a frontera desde Formosa en Argentina hasta la capital Asunción porque allá se encontraba Noe, una amiga que me había cruzado haciendo voluntariados unos meses antes. Al igual que en ese entonces, ella estaba siendo voluntaria en un nuevo hostel, y yo iría como huésped, pero eso no nos impediría pasear juntas como ya lo habíamos hecho en Salta 😃.

Traveling to a new country isn’t something I’ve done many times, and this would be my first extended stay in Paraguay. One thing that always concerns me is money, but this time I had researched that one of my debit cards charged lower fees on international purchases. My first test of that was the Uber I took from the terminal to Noe’s hostel, where we finally met after almost a year. I was happy to see her as lively as ever, eager to take me out to explore the new city she had been living in for over a month.

Viajar a un nuevo país no es algo que haya hecho muchas veces, y esta sería mi primera estadía larga en Paraguay. Una de las cosas que siempre me preocupa es el tema del dinero, pero esa vez había investigado que una de mis tarjetas de débito me cobraba menos impuestos en compras internacionales. Mi primera prueba de esto fue el Uber que tomé desde la terminal hasta el hostel de Noe, donde finalmente nos encontramos después de casi un año. Me alegré por verla tan animada como siempre, con ganas de llevarme a explorar la nueva ciudad en la que estaba hacía más de un mes.

Noe and I met during a two-week stay in Cafayate, Salta, in August 2024, and our reunion took place in May 2025. During that time, we were both traveling through different places until we met again there. Without a doubt, she is more adventurous than I am, having gone to another country for volunteer work, but I was really happy to see her again. Also, the hostel she was staying at cost only $4 per night, which was very convenient for my backpacker budget. As you can imagine, for that price the hostel wasn’t very luxurious, but it served its purpose of giving me a place to shower and sleep.

Noe y yo nos conocimos en una estadía de dos semanas en Cafayate, Salta, en Agosto de 2024, y nuestro reencuentro fue en Mayo 2025. En todo ese tiempo, las dos estuvimos viajando por diferentes lugares hasta volver a encontrarnos ahí. Sin dudas ella es más aventurera que yo al haberse ido a otro país con los voluntariados, pero me alegré de verla de nuevo. Además, el hostel en el que estaba costaba apenas $4 la noche, por lo que me resultó muy conveniente para mi presupuesto de mochilera. Se imaginarán que por ese precio el hostel no era muy lujoso, pero cumplió su función de darme un lugar para bañarme y dormir.

Although my plan was to arrive in Asunción early, I ended up getting there in the afternoon that day, but we still had time to go to the waterfront and enjoy the sunset. I found Asunción’s waterfront very charming, with lots of people walking and strolling around. Just like in Formosa, despite it being autumn, warm temperatures took over this place, so once the sun went down, everything was perfect for a walk and grabbing something to eat.

Si bien mi idea era llegar a Asunción temprano, ese día llegué por la tarde, pero igual nos quedó tiempo para ir a la costanera a disfrutar del atardecer. La costanera de Asunción me resultó muy encantadora, con mucha gente caminando y paseando. Al igual que en Formosa, a pesar de ser otoño, las temperaturas cálidas se adueñaron de este lugar, por lo que cuando bajó el sol todo fue ideal para dar un paseo y de paso comer algo.

Just like what happened to me in Bolivia, I was fascinated by how cheap everything was in Paraguay (or how expensive Argentina is). Almost everything cost us half the price compared to back home: we ate and drank for just $5, something that is almost impossible in my country. I didn’t expect our neighboring country to have such low prices, so I was glad I decided to cross the border. No wonder many backpackers continue their journey toward the north of South America—its economies are really affordable if you’re traveling with some dollars.

Al igual que lo que me pasó en Bolivia, yo estaba fascinada por lo barato que era todo en Paraguay (o lo costoso que es Argentina). Casi todo nos costaba la mitad de precio que en casa: comimos y bebimos por apenas $5, algo que en mi país es casi imposible. No me esperaba que nuestro país vecino manejara esos precios tan bajos, así que me alegré por haberme animado a cruzar la frontera. Con razón muchos mochileros continúan su viaje para el norte de Sudamérica: sus economías son reamente rentables si vas con unos cuantos dólares.

One of the best things about meeting so many people along the way as a backpacker is that you end up with friends scattered all over the map. I loved having the chance to see Noe again: when I met her in Salta, we got along immediately and have stayed in touch to this day. I was also happy to have an almost-local guide in Asunción, who was able to take me to the most touristic spots in the area: excellent service and great company, I really can’t complain ❤️.

Lo bueno de haber conocido a tanta gente en el camino como mochilera es que después te van quedando amigos desparramados en el mapa. Me encantó haber tenido la posibilidad de ver a Noe de nuevo: cuando la conocí en Salta, nos llevamos bien inmediatamente y quedamos en contacto hasta el día de hoy. También me alegré por haber tenido una guía casi local en Asunción, que me pudo llevar a los lugares más turísticos de esa zona: excelente servicio y buena compañía, no me puedo quejar ❤️.
