I took a one-night escape to Meissen while we had guests staying at home.
My partner had guests, his friend from childhood and her son. Our home is definitely too small. And even there is not enough mattresses ... I thought I might be stressed, so I told this honestly and took a day trip to Meissen.
Meissen seemed like a good destination. It’s close enough to Leipzig for a short trip, famous for porcelain, and the hotel I found had a spa. That sounded like a pretty good combination.
I had imagined Meissen as a very charming craft town, so my first impression was a little surprising. Around the station, there were quite a few empty shops, and the town felt more like a quiet regional city than the polished tourist destination I had pictured.
The old town is lovely, with narrow streets and historic buildings, but I still didn’t completely fall in love with it.
Of course, I also looked at Meissen porcelain. My impression was that they were too shiny for my daily use. And too pricy ... a cup for €99. I can appreciate the history, hand-painted decoration, and the craftmanship but I didn’t feel a strong desire to own one. Before the trip, I slightly tempted by some blue-and-white soup plates, but for everyday use I probably still prefer more casual ceramics, like the Portuguese ones.
Overall the best part of the trip was not the porcelain or even the sightseeing. It was the hotel spa.
I went to the sauna, took a long bath in my room, read books, ate when I felt like it, and didn’t have to adjust my schedule to anyone else.
That one quiet night reminded me that a trip doesn’t always have to be about discovering an amazing destination. Sometimes simply leaving home, changing the scenery and having some time completely to oneself is enough.
So as a one-night escape, though, it worked very well.
