Hidden Gems
It's interesting how you can go to a place countless times over the course of your life, but you always seem to find something new each time you visit. That was the case for me this past weekend as my wife and I traveled to the tip of the lower peninsula of Michigan and spent some time near Mackinaw City. The weather was absolutely amazing, and a far cry from the 110 degree (43.3C) days they are calling for this week. I'm going to absolutely melt!
On Saturday we were looking for something to occupy our time, and we had already taken a trip into town, so I looked at the map and found a spot just down the road from our campground called McGulpin Point. Just a short distance from it was also a small village sponsored by the Mackinaw Area Historical Society, so we decided to swing through there too.
We started our trip at the McGulpin Point lighthouse which was constructed in 1869. It was continued operation until 1906. With how much the trees have grown in this area, I would question if you could even see it from Lake Michigan now. While the McAlpin family (later changed to McGulpin wasn't the first family to man the lighthouse, they were the most well known, hence the name of the area.
Actually, this land was the first piece deeded in Emmet county in 1811 to the son of John McAlpin. It consisted of 640 acres.
We didn't go in the lighthouse. It was a $3 charge to get in and honestly once you have seen one lighthouse on the inside, you have seen them all. We just didn't think it was worth it for the cost. Along the .15 mile trail down to the water they have points of interest with informational signs you can read to learn more about the area.
This was the old well where they used to get their water from. There was supposed to be a photo, but you can't really see it because people have throw change and stuff inside covering it up. People are dumb sometimes.
Along with the informational signs, they also have these cutouts of people doing things. The placement of them is kind of interesting because it catches you off guard and if you aren't paying close attention it can be a bit scary. Like this guy looks like his is lurking in the bushes ready to jump out at you.
These were a couple more signs from along the path. I am not sure if you can really read them, but if you can, there is some good information there. It's interesting to see what they thought the state of Michigan looked like back in 1776 due to their rudimentary mapping methods.
Eventually, you make your way down to Lake Michigan and you are greeted with views of the straits of Mackinaw, the five mile long Mackinac bridge, and McGulpin rock. The bridge is 60 years old and inspired the Akashi-Kaikyo bridge in Japan after the engineers there came and talked to the engineers who designed the Mackinac Bridge.
As I said, in all my years of visiting this area, I can't remember having ever been to McGulpin point. The views were absolutely stunning and I can see how you might want to hang out in this area. While the beach isn't necessarily suited for swimming, there were a fair number of people walking along the shore hunting for rocks. Personally, I think this would be a great place to watch the fireworks from on the 4th of July, but I expect a lot of other people realize that as well!
It's worth the trip and the short walk for the views. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend you check it out!

Yeah, I didn't even realize it until I was writing the post though, so it wasn't a huge deal ;)
Places like this remind you that the best places are sometimes the ones that don't make it into the tourist brochures. The water is crystal clear, and the rocky shore has such a peaceful, untouched feel. So always look for nature's hidden gems!

Sometimes, people want to discover unseen gems in places everyone else goes and visits. And you've discovered one of those spots. I really liked the picture of the earthy area among the bushes. It looks great for a run first thing in the morning. I think most lighthouses have similar interiors. I saw the inside of the Gelidonya lighthouse. It consisted of a small room at the entrance, a storage area, and a space for the caretaker. The storage area contained fuel supplies and old-style logbooks.
That path was actually pretty steep! It's not something I would be able to run on. Especially with my injured foot right now!

What a beautiful island to visit! It must be a nice getaway for the two of you! I've never been to Mackinaw, but still recall the Seinfeld with the Mackinaw peaches (which don't exist...) lol

Nope, no peaches, but lots of fudge. They are famous for it. I brought some of the peanut butter and chocolate peanut butter home. It's almost all gone already!
We love that view and try to get to the bridge a couple times of year. I love it when the blue ice comes in the winter. It's worth checking out in all seasons really.
I've never seen the blue ice, but I have seen pictures for sure. I'm dealing with an achilles injury right now, so that .3 mile round trip path felt like it was more like 10 miles!

I've never been to Michigan, but I do miss Lake Superior, and the Great Lakes are definitely a special place. But if you want lighthouses, the Oregon coast in the place to see them.

We have been talking about going to Oregon or Washington sometime. It's an area of the country we would definitely like to explore! My wife and I are going to get a bit different view of Lake Superior next week. I am super excited about it.
I'd recommend taking the interstate through South Dakota to see Wall Drug and Mt. Rushmore if you haven't been there, and then detouring to Devil's Tower in the NE corner of Wyoming.
If time allows, perhaps a longer detour north of Missoula to the National Bison Range is in order? You could then head to Quinn's Hot Springs. Otherwise, keep on the freeway and visit the Montana Valley Book Store in Alberton. In any case, don't miss the 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar.
See the center of the universe in Wallace, Idaho. Then the Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane.
Head to the Toppenish Northern Pacific Railway museum, then go south to see the Maryhill Museum.
A drive through the gorge is next, and you can see waterfalls on the Oregon side, or Beacon Rock on the Washington side.
Then, in Portland, Oregon, there is a zoo and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.
If you head to McMinnville, the Evergreen Aviationuseum is home to the Spruce Goose and more.
Finally, head to Tallamook to see the cheese factory, Newport for the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and plenty of lighthouse museums in that general region if you're still interested in those at all.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
