If I’m honest, as I was reading I couldn’t help wondering how your guests deal with the whole safety issue over there. I know there are cartels and gangs around… and of course it’s not their home country. Are the two of them travelling on their own, or do they have someone accompanying them? Here in my country I often avoid cycling on my own because of safety concerns… but I do think Cuba is far safer than Mexico by a long stretch.

The two are a couple, so they are traveling together. But apart from them there are a bunch of other cyclists touring Mexico (and the rest of the continent). Some of them are further ahead, others behind, some even go the opposite way. Occasionally they meet in person, if they happen to be close, but mostly they keep in touch over various social media. This way they can let other riders know where they have passed through, and whether they felt safe or unsafe. Clearly, there's never a 100% guarantee, but it helps quite a lot.
