Cycling - Rolling through Balcarce in the interior of Buenos Aires: the peaceful charm and historic center of a small town. / Pedaleando por Balcarce en el interior de Buenos Aires: la tranquilidad y casco histórico de un pequeño pueblo. 😃❤️

Besides hiking in the mountains, another activity I really enjoy is cycling. On almost every trip I've taken, I've had the chance to go for a bike ride, both to get some exercise and to explore places that would be too far to reach on foot. During my little getaway to Balcarce, some people in the group had brought their bicycles, so I didn't hesitate to borrow one and go for a ride. According to the map, just a few minutes of pedaling would be enough to reach several interesting places 😃.

Algo que me gusta hacer además de caminar en las montañas, es andar un bicicleta. En todos los viajes que hice, tuve la oportunidad de salir a pedalear un poco, con el objetivo de hacer un poco de ejercicio y poder llegar más allá que lo que me permiten mis pies. Cuando hice la pequeña escapada a Balcarce, algunas personas del grupo habían llevado bicicletas, así que no dudé en agarrar una y salir a pasear un poco. Según el mapa, con solo unos minutos de pedaleada, podía ver unas cuantas cosas interesantes 😃.

The interior of Buenos Aires Province is full of small towns waiting to be explored. Now that I only have weekends free for traveling, I plan to visit several of them. Starting with Balcarce, located 385 km south of the City of Buenos Aires, turned out to be a great choice. The main purpose of this trip was to go hiking, but after spending some time in the mountains, there was still plenty of daylight left. It was the perfect opportunity to make a quick trip into the town center, since our accommodation was located on the outskirts.

El interior de Buenos Aires está lleno de pequeños pueblos para ir a explorar. Ahora que solo tengo los fines de semana libres para ir a pasear, tengo pensado visitar algunos de ellos. Empezar por Balcarce a 385 km al sur de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires fue una gran opción. Hicimos este paseo con el objetivo de hacer un poco de trekking, pero después de haber caminado un poco por las montañas, todavía quedaba bastante luz del día. Esto fue perfecto para hacerme una escapada hasta el centro de la ciudad, ya que nuestro alojamiento se encontraba en las afueras.

The city of Balcarce isn't very large, and from what I saw while exploring, it seems like a peaceful place to live. It's amazing how, after traveling just a little beyond the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, it already feels like you're in a completely different world. The town center reflects the same quiet atmosphere as the residential neighborhoods, with its main square and historic buildings that preserve the city's heritage. It was Sunday during my visit, yet there were still plenty of people out and about.

La ciudad de Balcarce no es muy grande y por lo que pude ver en el camino, parece ser un lugar tranquilo para vivir. Es increíble como te alejas un poco del Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires y ya parece que estás en un lugar completamente diferente. El centro de la ciudad es igual que la zona residencial, con su plaza principal y sus edificios históricos que recuerdan la fundación del lugar. Durante mi paseo era domingo, pero aún así había mucha gente alrededor.

Like many other towns in the interior of Buenos Aires Province, Balcarce is home to several works by the renowned architect Salamone. His vision was to create striking landmarks that would give travelers a reason to visit these small towns. With his unmistakable style of gray stone and bold geometric lines, Salamone's architecture could be found throughout the city. He was best known for designing town halls, cemeteries, and municipal slaughterhouses, although he also created other public buildings and churches. I had already seen some of his work in Azul, Saldungaray, and Carhué—other towns in the interior of Buenos Aires—and it was just as exciting to come across his architecture in Balcarce as well.

Así como muchos otros pueblos del interior de Buenos Aires, Balcarce está lleno de la obra del gran arquitecto Salamone. Él tenía la idea de dejar obras impactantes en estos pueblos, que dieran a los turistas motivos para visitarlos. Con su estilo totalmente reconocible, de piedra gris y diseños rectos, Salamone estaba en todas partes por aquí. Este arquitecto generalmente diseñaba las municipalidades, los cementerios y los mataderos locales, aunque también hacía algunos otros edificios o iglesias. Ya había visto algunas de sus obras en Azul, Saldungaray y Carhué, otros pueblos del interior de Buenos Aires, y también fue genial verlo por Balcarce.

While checking the map, I noticed that Salamone's municipal slaughterhouse wasn't far from where I was, so I rode my bike there to see it just before the last light of the day faded away. Today, the building has been converted into a cultural center, and although it was closed when I arrived, I was still able to enter the grounds with my bicycle and explore the surroundings. Next to it stood a church with an interesting architectural style. It looked more modern than Salamone's work, but it was still well worth seeing.

Revisando el mapa, vi que el matadero municipal de Salamone no quedaba nada lejos de donde estaba, así que pedaleé hasta allá, para verlo justo con la última luz del sol. Actualmente, este edificio está transformado en un centro cultural y aunque al momento de mi visita estaba cerrado, pude entrar con la bicicleta y recorrer sus alrededores. Al costado de este lugar había una iglesia, también con una arquitectura interesante, aunque se veía más moderna que la obra de Salamone. Igualmente fue interesante de ver.

The last place I would have liked to visit was the municipal cemetery, which was also designed by Salamone. However, by the time I returned to our accommodation after meeting up with the group, it was already dark, so I wouldn't have been able to see much anyway (not to mention how creepy it would have been to pass by the cemetery entrance alone at night). I guess I'll save that for another visit. Still, I was really happy to have a bicycle, since it allowed me to explore the town at my own pace. In total, I rode 14 km, which might not seem like much for a regular cyclist, but it was more than enough for me after a morning of traveling, an afternoon by the pool, and an evening of hiking. That was a lot to fit into a single day—it couldn't have been more complete ❤️.

Lo último que hubiese querido ver era el cementerio municipal, también hecho por este arquitecto, pero para cuando regresé al alojamiento con el grupo, ya era de noche y no iba a poder ver mucho (además de lo tenebroso que resultaría pasar sola de noche por la puerta del cementerio). Supongo que quedará para una próxima visita, pero por el momento, me encantó contar con la bicicleta para poder dar una vuelta y recorrer este lugar. En total, mi paseo duró 14 km, quizás poco para un ciclista regular, pero bastante para mí después de una mañana de viaje, tarde de pileta y atardecer de trekking. Un montón de cosas para un simple día: no podría haber sido más completo ❤️.
