New garden update, still growing tomatoes and peppers like crazy!
Happy Wednesday everyone! Halfway through the work week already. I was out in my garden a couple days ago and decided to take some new updated pictures. Weather here in southern California has been perfect for tomatoes and peppers, hot in the day, cool at night. I've got so many jalapeños in the fridge it's time to pickle up a huge batch of them. I'll make up a post when I do.
First up it this Roma tomato hybrid variety. It's producing non stop, and I'm eating tomatoes all day long anymore. This particular hybrid is a San Marzano variety, so sweet and not too acidic.
Some more tomatoes, I have them surrounding the house and in the grow beds. I love tomatoes!
My peppers have done really well, the jalapeño variety I'm growing this year is called La Bomba II. I'm not sure what the first variety tasted like, but these are fleshy and taste great. They have some nice heat to them as well!
At the bottom you can see one I let get too ripe, a bright red jalapeno is always really hot. That's going to be good!
In the background you can see my string beans taking over everywhere. But another jalapeno plant that is producing a load of spicy peppers, every few weeks they have a fresh load to pick.
Here you see some Shishito peppers, a mild pepper that I love to roast on the grill and add to a sauce made of soy sauce, garlic, and ginger. They are so yummy!

I thought I had some of my basil pictures too, and updated tomatillos. I'll save those for next time. I've been having a great year in the garden, but I have let it get so overgrown. It has grown so fast and well it's been really hard to contain this year. One of these years I'll stay on top of it as it grows, but it's easier said that done.
It's sure is nice to get fresh veggies every day from your backyard though. Do any of you grow any gardens at all? What's your favorite item to grow?

Thanks, I love tomatoes. It's too bad in winter they stop producing as heavily. They still produce some, but it's cooler than the plants like even in southern California!

There's something exciting about summer veggies! Maybe as they taste of warmth and sunshine in direct comparision to earthy cool season veggies. Overgrown tomatoes are not a bad thing I don't think - I used to say that every year: 'one day I'll have neat tomatoes' but I'm just not that kind of tomato gardener haha. I was talking to an Italian guy at a shop the other day and we were saying how good the tomatoes are in Europe, just sliced into bread with a drizzle of olive oil or maybe some good cheese, that's it - simply delicious. But backyard tomatoes, when the soil is right, are the bomb as well. Enjoy!
That was my breakfast today ironically. Fresh tomato, slice with a drizzle of olive oil, I added some fresh basil and parmesan. On fresh bread, it was awesome! I love tomatoes, even when they overgrown and almost always do! lol

We love tomatoes as well my friend, unfortunately they do not grow very well in the Pacific Northwest what a shame!🙄
Southern California definitely has sunshine and the heat, and your garden looks like it's doing awesome!
Too bad they don't grow well there, the soil may be too acidic and not warm enough. Blueberries grow great there though!
I think it's a combination of cool nights, and being in the deep forest....🙄
In Cincinnati they grew like weeds, you didn't even need to take care of them Lol!!

I don't know why ...... But I remember Tobacco Tomato (an addictive fictional cross breed) from Simpsons.
Good old Tomacco Homer bred using plutonium if I recall. That was a funny episode!

I could eat it all my life..let's marinara that up, Ryan! Authentic Italian spaghetti is actually sweet, so can't understand people making a fuss about Filo spaghetti being sweet... well, it's a hybrid kind of sweet, even so, i like it.
Basil is good for pesto... and pests too, such as mosquitoes, haha. Glad to see your garden thriving!
San Marzano hybrids are perfect for sauces and salsa. They taste great, better than most tomatoes. Basil is a must, I usually eat some mixed in with tomatoes, olive oil on fresh bread for breakfast most days!

I've never been able to grow roma's well, which is sad because those are my favorite kind. I'd love to get some nice heirlooms one day, but the best I have ever had luck with are just cherry tomatoes. My mom gave me a bag of tomatoes and jalapenos from their garden the other day. It seems those must be doing well all over!
A lot of it is the soil, it has to be organic enough with sufficient drainage to make them happy. Then when it's hot they need to be watered every other day. Cherry tomatoes are great though, just pick a bunch and they make a perfect snack. Nice that your mom gave you a bunch of goodies, it's bee a good year for jalapenos!
I think that is the big thing and part of the reason that I stopped doing a garden. I just don't have the time to tend to it properly.
