I’ve talked about this reserve before, but since it’s such a vast area—with certain parts of the mountain range reaching 529 meters, making it the highest point in Lisbon—and covering an area of approximately 14,450 to 17,000 hectares, it will take you quite a while to explore the accessible areas.
Right at the entrance, there are several signs indicating that this is a protected area, along with information about the different species you might encounter, such as deer, horses, various bird species, weasels, foxes, snakes, etc.

It’s very common to come across livestock in the area, so don’t be surprised if you run into a sheep or a herding dog in the middle of your hike. Nearby, there are small villages with farms that often use the reserve to graze their livestock. This is not illegal at all and can be done without any problem, obviously while respecting and accepting the risks involved, since, as we mentioned earlier, predators also inhabit this area. However, most of them are nocturnal and are rarely seen by humans. Sadly, the greatest predator of all is us—the other predators fear us.
Other highlights of the reserve include several tourist spots; most are lookouts or ancient ruins that you can visit, and nearby are the tourist areas of Sintra. However, since it is a protected reserve, there is no vehicle access, so you’ll have to walk most of the way.
ESP
