The stunning Mifafi moor. Eng-Esp

Hello, nature lovers! It’s great to see you again. Today I wanted to share with you some photos of the beautiful Mifafi Valley, one of the places that impressed me most on my recent trip along the Trans-Andean Highway in Mérida State—the highest-altitude highway in Venezuela.

The Mifafi Valley is one of those places that stays with you forever—and not just because, at over 4,000 meters above sea level (between 3,600 and 4,320 meters, to be exact), you struggle to breathe and feel a cold that chills you to the bone, but because, even in the midst of these extreme conditions, you’re welcomed with such warmth and generosity that you simply cherish every moment there.

As you drive up this steep, winding road, you can’t help but admire the scenery through the windows; the views of the páramo and superpáramo ecosystems captivate you with their beauty, just as the frailejones capture moisture, collect water, and help maintain the ecosystem’s balance.

We left behind these views filled with lush vegetation and shades of green and yellow, only to come upon immense, rugged mountains in shades of gray, covered in rocks. This reminded me of my geology classes in college, where my professor placed a strong emphasis on the periglacial geology that characterizes Sierra de la Culata National Park.

In this area, vegetation is sparse, but there is an impressive display of rock fragments; according to this article, there is a large quantity of granitic rocks composed mainly of quartz. If you love geology, hiking these trails will be a true paradise for you.

When you see the enormous rocks that have accumulated at the foot of the mountain, you wonder how many years it took for them to get there. It’s incredible to think about the entire glacial process each one has gone through and how they’ve accumulated in layers according to their age. Freezing and thawing undoubtedly leave their mark, and of course, gravity never stops doing its job.

This is just a small glimpse of a vast valley where you can feel the breeze and the mist envelops you, making it feel very cold, especially at night. When we arrived in this part of the páramo, it was around 5 p.m. I forgot to check the temperature, but it was too cold for our young son, so we didn’t stay outside for long.

A few raindrops began to fall; we thought it would rain heavily, but it was just a passing shower. Still, it certainly felt very different; every drop of water seemed to weigh more, hitting you in the face.

In the Mifafi moorland lies the Condor Refuge, which I’ve mentioned before; it’s a tourist attraction, but it’s also the starting point for several hiking trails leading to the famous Mifafi Dome and various lagoons, which I can only imagine are beautiful. I hope I can visit them someday. The truth is, to enjoy these trails, you need to be in good physical shape and acclimate gradually to these weather conditions, because the lack of oxygen can really give you a hard time.

At one point, I felt dizzy and had a headache; I just took a few deep breaths and rested for a bit, and it went away quickly, but many people can get sick or suffer from “altitude sickness,” as we colloquially call it, so it’s a good idea to take plenty of breaks as you climb into the highlands.

I’m happy to look back on this road trip across the Andes and the wonderful memories I made exploring part of the Mifafi moorland, also known as the “Condor’s Refuge.” I hope you enjoy it and get to visit soon.

Hola, amigos amantes de la naturaleza, qué gusto poder saludarlos nuevamente. Hoy quise compartir con ustedes algunas fotografías del hermoso valle de Mifafi, uno de los lugares que más me impresionó en mi último recorrido por la carretera transandina del estado Mérida, la carretera con mayor altitud en el país, Venezuela.

El valle de Mifafi es de esos lugares que se quedan grabados en tu memoria y no solo porque a más de 4000 msnm (entre 3600 y 4.320 msnm para ser exactos) sientes esa dificultad para recibir oxígeno y un frío que te cala hasta los huesos, sino que en medio de estas condiciones extremas te reciben con tanta calidez y generosidad que simplemente amas cada minuto en este lugar.

Mientras asciendes por esta carretera con pendientes altas y llena de curvas, es inevitable admirar el paisaje a través de las ventanas; las vistas del ecosistema de páramo y superpáramo te atrapan con su belleza, así como los frailejones atrapan la humedad, recogen agua y equilibran el ecosistema.

Fuimos dejando estas vistas llenas de vegetación y con tonalidades verdes y amarillentas, para encontrarnos con unas inmensas montañas escarpadas en tonos grises, llenas de rocas. Esto me hizo recordar mis clases de geología en la universidad, donde mi profesor hacía bastante énfasis en la geología periglaciar que caracteriza al parque nacional Sierra de la Culata.

En esta zona la vegetación es escasa, pero existe una muestra impresionante de fragmentos de rocas; de acuerdo a este artículo, se encuentra una gran cantidad de rocas graníticas compuestas principalmente por cuarzo. Si eres amante de la geología, recorrer estos senderos será un verdadero paraíso para ti.

Al ver las enormes piedras que se han ido depositando al pie de la montaña, te preguntas cuántos años han pasado para que pudiesen estar allí. Es increíble pensar en todo el proceso glacial por el cual ha pasado cada una de ellas y cómo cada uno se acumula por capas de acuerdo a su edad. La congelación y la descongelación sin duda dejan grandes huellas y por supuesto que la gravedad nunca deja de hacer su trabajo.

Esta es solo una pequeña muestra de un inmenso valle donde la brisa se siente y la neblina te arropa, llegando a sentirse temperaturas muy bajas, especialmente durante la noche. Cuando llegamos a esta zona del páramo eran cerca de las 5 de la tarde. Olvidé revisar la temperatura, pero fue demasiado para nuestro pequeño hijo, así que no estuvimos mucho tiempo a la intemperie.

Comenzaron a caer algunas gotas de lluvia; pensamos que llovería con intensidad, pero fue algo pasajero, pero sin duda, se siente muy diferente; cada gota de agua parecía que pesaba más, te golpeaba el rostro.

En el páramo de Mifafi, se encuentra el refugio del cóndor, el cual ya he compartido anteriormente, siendo este un atractivo turistico, pero además este es el comienzo de varias rutas de excursión que conducen al famoso domo de mifafi y a distintas lagunas, las cuales puedo imaginar que son hermosas, ojalá pueda en algún momento conocerlas, lo cierto, es que para disfrutar de estas rutas, debe existir una buena preparación fisica y aclimatarse poco a poco a estas condiciones climaticas, porque la falta de oxigeno, puede realmente hacerte pasar un mal rato.

En algún momento me sentí mareada y me dolió la cabeza; solo respiré profundo y descansé un poco y se me pasó rápidamente, pero muchas personas pueden enfermarse o darles mal de páramo, como lo llamamos coloquialmente, por eso es bueno hacer suficientes paradas previas, a medida que ascienden al páramo.

Estoy feliz de recordar este viaje por la carretera trasandina y los buenos momentos que dejaron en mí conocer parte del páramo de Mifafi, conocido también como el refugio del cóndor. Espero les guste y puedan conocerlo pronto.
