Today, I visited the famous "Nativity scene" village, renowned for its secluded location in a valley within Portugal's Serra do Açor. It is one of the aldeias de xisto (schist villages) known for their distinctive black-stone architecture. I took the opportunity to put together a story about an alleged murderer who hid in the village during the 14th century and to photograph the beautiful landscapes, so today's post offers a little bit of everything.📸🚙
Hoy visité la popular aldea "pesebre", famosa por estar aislada en un valle de la Sierra de Açor en Portugal. Esta forma parte de las aldeias de xisto (aldeas de esquisto), conocidas por su peculiar construcción de piedra negra. Aproveché para crear un reportaje sobre un supuesto asesino que se escondió en la aldea en el siglo XIV y para fotografiar los hermosos paisajes; por eso, el post de hoy tiene un poco de todo🗺️🌏
The Serra do Açor is incredible and boasts beautiful scenery. Located in central Portugal, it connects with two other mountain ranges: Lousã and Estrela. While the highest peak reaches 1,418 meters, we will be driving to an elevation of 700 meters, meaning the village isn't situated at the summit; instead, it is nestled in what looks like a canyon. Public transport is not an option; to visit Piódão, you must travel by private vehicle🚙📸
La Sierra de Açor es increíble y tiene hermosos paisajes. Se encuentra en el centro de Portugal y se conecta con otras dos cordilleras (Lousã y Estrela). Aunque el punto más alto alcanza los 1418 metros, nosotros conduciremos hasta los 700 metros, lo que nos indica que la aldea no está en una zona tan alta; por el contrario, se encuentra en una especie de cañón. Honestly, despite how isolated the village is and how far away everything else is, there is plenty to do! Just keep in mind that these are all outdoor activities—with the exception of the churches and heritage sites. Here is a list of places to visit; I’ll show you one of the most beautiful ones (Foz d'Égua).🏞️🌍

The stone used to construct the village's architecture is known as "schist" (xisto in Portuguese). This stone is abundant in the Serra do Açor, and the local population has used it for building throughout its history. One factor driving the use of this stone was the village's isolation; roads connecting the area to the outside world—and thus to tourism—were not built until 1970, whereas previously, horses were used for transport.🌍🚙
La piedra utilizada para la construcción de la arquitectura de la aldea se llama "esquisto" (en portugués, xisto). Esta piedra abunda en gran cantidad en la Sierra de Açor, y a lo largo de la historia la población ha utilizado este material para la construcción. Uno de los factores que impulsó el uso de estas piedras fue lo aislada que estaba la aldea; no fue sino hasta 1970 cuando se construyeron carreteras en la zona para conectarla con el turismo, ya que antes se utilizaban caballos para el transporte.📍🌏

What led me to the village was my research into the story of the murderer Diogo Pacheco, who is believed to have hidden there in the 14th century. Many people commenting on the YouTube video asked how it could be anything other than a "legend"—implying that anything might be true or false—but the story is actually factual and documented in historical records. The only real uncertainty is whether the killer fled straight to Spain or took refuge in that village; the rest of the story is true. I concluded that he did indeed take refuge there, and I have a hunch that it was King Alfonso IV himself who recommended this village—located in the middle of nowhere—as a hiding place in case the crime was investigated.🚩📸
Lo que me llevó a la aldea fue investigar la historia del asesino Diogo Pacheco, quien se cree que se escondió en ella en el siglo XIV. Muchos me preguntaban en el video de YouTube que, al ser una "leyenda", cualquier cosa podría ser cierta; sin embargo, en realidad la historia es real y está documentada en registros históricos. Lo único que entra en el terreno de la especulación es si el asesino huyó directo a España o si se refugió aquí; por lo demás, todo el relato es verdad. Yo concluí que sí se refugió en este lugar y tengo la intuición de que fue el propio Alfonso IV quien le recomendaría esta aldea en medio de la nada en caso de que se investigara el crimen.🏞️🗺️

This is one of Portugal's most beautiful villages; it belongs to the parish of Piódão and is a must-visit stop. Located just a few kilometers away, it offers a convenient parking area. It is world-renowned for its river beach, formed by crystal-clear waters fed by mountain rainfall. You can also cross a fun wooden bridge and continue admiring the distinctive xisto (schist) architecture.🚩🌏
Esta es una de las aldeas más bonitas de Portugal. Pertenece a la parroquia de Piódão, por lo que es una parada obligatoria; está a pocos kilómetros y puedes dejar tu carro en un estacionamiento. Es conocida en todo el mundo por su playa fluvial, producto de un río cristalino que se alimenta de la lluvia de la sierra. You did a fantastic review of Piódão village! Before settling in an inland Spanish city, I was checking out real estate prices in rural areas of Portugal and found some really nice, cheap gems! I haven't purchased anything yet, but seeing how this village looks, it's tempting!
I like stone houses, peaceful villages in remote locations... Maybe I should suggest to my wife that we could visit Piódão!
The only issue with these kinds of places is rain... As it's in the mountains, I suppose it rains a lot, and winters are probably snowy... After enjoying Spanish sun for over a decade, it's hard to change it for rain... 😃

Saludos! Honestamente en terminos de lluvia es medio parecido a Lisboa porque es centro, el norte si llueve mucho! Lo que si es duro es el invierno hace mucho frio por la sierra y estar sobre mil metros, el proximo video que subire casualmente son 5 aldeas aisladas de Portugal, algunas son mas centricas que piodao, honestamente no viviria alli 😅, precios? Muchos en las aldeas me abordaron para vender casas jaja, un terreno con una casa destruida 15 a 25mil, una casa terminada sobre 80mil, 100mil, 120mil

Saludos @biologistbrito, la aldea De Belén tiene una hermosa arquitectura, e increibles vistas de la montaña, me encantó el puente colgante.
Una publicación muy completa.
Ojalá tuviera la posibilidad de viajar a Portugal. De seguro, esta aldea sería un lugar obligado.
Pero, a pesar de toda la belleza que alberga el lugar, como geólogo y geógrafo me quedaría a investigar los esquistos, un tipo de roca metamórfica muy particular y que tiene usos para la construcción, se pueden usar como áridos, como rocas ornamentales o para la industria mineral.
