Negronis, an Odd Old Photo, and a Cat on the Hunt: A Siem Reap Bar Night

Negronis, an Odd Old Photo, and a Cat on the Hunt: A Siem Reap Bar Night

Another evening, another quiet local bar in Siem Reap. No big plan — just a good drink, a window seat, and whatever the night decided to throw at us. As it turned out, that included a vintage photo with a strange caption and a cat with a body count.

First thing that got me was this old framed photo on the wall, captioned simply "Wealthy People." A faded colonial-era shot — uniformed men in pith helmets lined up behind a row of local kids — hung there like a label at a museum, just so you'd know what wealthy people are supposed to look like. I found the irony funny. The local friend I was with didn't see anything odd about it at all, which honestly made it funnier. Two people, same photo, completely different read.

Then the drinks showed up. I went with a Negroni — bitter, stiff, exactly what I wanted — sitting in the candlelight with the shopfronts across the lane reflected in the glass. There's something I like about a dark bar with a window onto a bright, busy street. You get the calm and the chaos at the same time.

My friend ordered something called a Sunshine, which came out pale gold with a dried citrus wheel floating on top. Tangy — properly tangy, the kind that makes you wince a little on the first sip and then reach back for more. Better-looking than my Negroni, I'll admit, but I stand by my choice.

Through the window, the lane did its thing — motorbikes parked nose-to-tail, a bar front lit up with its opening hours and happy-hour board, the usual evening shuffle going by. I could have watched it for an hour.

And then the entertainment arrived. A cat came strolling along the ledge, and before we'd fully clocked what was happening, it had a lizard pinned off the wall and was tearing through it right in front of us. We watched, slightly mouth-agape, as nature did its blunt little thing over our drinks. But look at this cat — lean, muscled, all business. That's no pampered house pet. That's a street cat that knows exactly how to survive, and the lizard never stood a chance.

That's the thing about a night out here. You sit down for a quiet drink and end up with a colonial-era riddle, a tangy cocktail you didn't order, and a front-row seat to a tiny murder. Not a bad haul for a slow night.

What's the most unexpected thing you've watched go down from a bar stool? Let me know below.
