First evergreen collection // Перша хвойна колекція

These are my first coniferous plants. They arrived incredibly fast. I ordered them on Friday, sometime in the evening, and already this morning I received them — they came from the Chernivtsi region. My husband went to meet his brother and nephew at the Chișinău airport, since they decided to visit us this summer. I even promised them a visit to a real "Maidan," but events are unfolding so quickly that maybe they won’t get to see any "Maidan" at all :)

I didn’t expect the package to arrive so quickly, and I didn’t dare leave it for two days at the cargo post office. Because I don’t know how hard it would be for the plants there. The soil was quite moist, and most likely they would have survived, but just in case I redirected the delivery to a courier and received it this morning.

The package itself looked like this: the tree (spruce) was reinforced with hard cardboard, while the other junipers and thujas were packed close together. But they’re young and flexible, so they straightened out easily.

Ось такими прийшли мої перші хвойні рослинки. Неймовірно швидко. Замовила я їх у п'ятницю десь під вечір, а вже сьогодні вранці отримала, їхали вони десь з Чернівецької області. Чоловік поїхав зустрічати брата з племінником у Кишинівський аеропорт, бо вони вирішили відвідати нас цього літа. Навіть я їм обіцяла відвідування справжнього "Майдану", але події розвертаються настільки швидко, що може й не дістанеться для них ніякого Майдану )
І я не очікувала, що посилка прийде настільки швидко, а залишати її на два дні у вантажному поштовому відділенні я не наважилась. Бо я ж не знаю, наскільки їм важко буде там. Грунт досить вогкий був, і скоріше за все вони б пережили, але про всяк я переадресувала на кур'єра і отримала сьогодні вранці.

Сама запакована посилка виглядала ось так. Дерево (ялинка) там було посилене жорстким картоном, а інші ялівці і туї складені один до одного. Ну вони гнучкі молоденькі, тож легко випростались.

And this is the original packaging, because I cut off all that plastic and repacked everything into clean bags. All the pots have the varieties labeled. Right now I’m thinking that with this heat it’s better to keep them on the balcony for another couple of months, and plant them in September so they don’t get scorched. The balcony now smells of pine and junipers :) That should make the spiders, who weren’t scared off by the lavender, finally run away (though I think the real secret is that less of their food is flying toward my windows). There really are fewer spiders this year. There are still a few on the outside of the window, but not a single one on the balcony itself. In previous years they would crawl into the cracks and I’d constantly see them growing in the corners, sometimes even inside the apartment. But this year there are none inside the apartment or on the balconies.

А це рідне пакування, бо я весь цей пластик позрізала і переклала в чистенькі пакети. Ну і на вазончиках усі сорти підписані. Зараз думаю, що з такою спекою я їх краще потримаю на балконі ще пару місяців, і краще висаджу вже у вересні, щоб вони не погоріли. Балкон тепер пахне хвоєю і ялівцями ) Це щоб недолякані лавандою павуки зовсім потікали (хоча я думаю секрет скоріше в тому, що різної їхньої їжі до моїх вікон летить менше). Павуків цього року реально менше. Їх все одно є кілька на тому боці вікна, але на самому балконі аніскілечки, бо раніше щороку вони заповзали у шпаринки і я їх по кутках постійно бачила вже підрослих, навіть і в квартирі бувало, а цього року в квартирі і на балконах всередині немає.

I think such plants are usually bought in garden centers, where you can look around and choose, but we never made it there this year — there was just no time. So I sat down and picked out the varieties I wanted most. But I started from one specific shrub — the Meyeri juniper. These are my two main heroes: this juniper and the blue spruce.

The blue spruce will grow near the house, and in a couple of years we’ll be able to wrap it with garlands and hang treats and decorations right outside. Something like in the famous "Home Alone", when everything outside is glowing with lights. Well, we won’t go that far yet, though who knows how things will turn out.

And the juniper I chose so that it would be a medium-sized bush, planted as the main decoration on the other side of the fence. To bring color in winter. So I picked a shrub that could look artistic on its own, and this bluish-gray shade with yellow spring shoots drooping down really appealed to me. This is how it looks now. And in fact, I found a small inexpensive one on Rozetka, and then from the same supplier I selected other plants to build up a collection (since you usually need to place an order of at least 400–500 UAH anyway (10 USD ;) )).

Думаю, що частіше такі рослинки купуються в садових центрах, де можна подивитись і повибирати, але ми так і не доїхали цього року, все нема коли. І от я посиділа та повибирала ті сорти, які мені б хотілось найбільше. Але я відштовхувалась від конкретного чагарника - ялівця Meyeri. Це два моїх головних героя - цей ялівець і блакитна ялинка. Блакитна ялинка, яка буде рости поблизу будинку, і яку ми за пару років зможемо обгортати гірляндами і вішати смаколики та прикраси прямо на вулиці. Щось таке, як у славнозвісному "Один вдома", коли надворі все сяє гірляндами. Ну настільки ми не замахнемось поки що, хоча хтозна як піде.

А ялівець я обирала такий, щоб був середньорослим кущем, і посадити його як головну прикрасу по той бік паркану. Щоб були кольори взимку. Тож я обирала чагарник, який може виглядати художньо сам по собі, і оцей блакитно-сизуватий колір, з жовтими приростами навесні, які хиляться донизу, мені дуже зайшов. Ось таким він виглядає зараз. І власне я знайшла на Розетці його недорогого маленького, а потім у того самого постачальника повибирала і інші рослинки, щоб набрати колекцію (все рівно там від 400-500 грн зазвичай треба робити замовлення).

Very cool plants. Right now they all look quite similar, just little green ones, but in three or four years they’ll be completely different. I don’t have any experience with such plants yet, but I’m really curious whether, once they grow into their decorative form, I’ll be able to control their growth so they don’t all spread out to 2–3 meters. Even a spruce up to 5 meters seems fine to me, but in adulthood it can reach 15 meters, and I definitely don’t need that, even though I’ll plant it where nothing will get in its way. Still, I can’t imagine 15 meters — whether that would look beautiful or not near a small house.

There’s time :) we’ll see.

Дуже класні рослинки. Вони так-то маленькими усі виглядають дуже схожими зелененькими, але за три-чотири роки усі будуть геть різними. Досвіду у мене з такими рослинами поки ніякого, але дуже цікаво, чи зможу я, коли вони підростуть до декоративного вигляду, стримувати їх зростання, щоб вони у мене прям всі по 2-3 метри не розростались. Навіть ялина до 5 м мені наче ок, але ж в дорослому віці вона може сягати 15 м, а мені стільки зовсім не треба, хоч я її і посаджу там, де ніщо їй не заважатиме. Але не можу уявити собі 15 м - гарно це чи ні поруч з маленьким будинком.
